The School of Sustainable Energy Engineering (SEE) is the first of its kind in Western Canada, providing an interdisciplinary education that will prepare the next generation of leaders in clean technology. SEE is housed in a newly constructed, state-of-the-art engineering expansion to the SFU Surrey campus, and the first cohort of students arrived in Fall 2019.

TENURE-TRACK FACULTY POSITIONS

The School of Sustainable Energy Engineering (SEE) at Simon Fraser University (SFU) invites applications for multiple tenure-track faculty positions at all levels (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor). Applicants should hold a Ph.D. degree in a relevant engineering discipline and research and teaching interests in one or more of the following areas:
- Sustainable and energy-efficient built environments: smart buildings, sustainable building design, adaptable building design, building energy management systems, resilient building design for climate change
- Electrical energy storage systems: batteries and battery systems (for applications such as EVs, BEES, BTM, FTM, eVTOLs and eCTOLs), battery management systems, supercapacitors
- Application of power electronics: renewables, microgrids, clean transportation, power converters, flexible AC transmission systems
SEE is based out of a brand-new research and teaching facility at SFU's Surrey campus, located on unceded Coast Salish Territory - the traditional territories of the Squamish (Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw), Tsleil-Waututh, Musqueam (xʷməθkʷəy̓əm), and Kwikwetlem First Nations. SEE is actively building a diverse, inclusive community. The successful candidate will report to the school Director, and their primary responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Developing a world-class research program in areas strategic to the overall SEE initiative, demonstrating excellence and leading a team of research trainees.
- Developing and teaching a regular course load comprising core SEE undergraduate courses, senior-level technical electives, and graduate courses in focus areas related to the candidate’s areas of training and expertise.
- Contributing actively to building a vibrant culture in SEE through participation in undergraduate or graduate program committees and other service and liaison roles as assigned by the school Director.
The ideal candidate is expected to possess and demonstrate the following qualifications:
- Ph.D. in an engineering discipline related to the above recruitment areas.
- Demonstrated capacity for research excellence, including a focus on sustainability in energy systems.
- Proven track record of developing and teaching engineering courses at undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Excellent communication skills and commitment to a thoughtful and engaged working culture.
- Demonstrated record of experience with sustainability practices in engineering.
- Eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia within one year of assuming the position.
The School will consider applications at the ranks of assistant, associate, and full professor, with the following expectations:
- Assistant Professor: excellent research achievements demonstrated by publications at top venues with the candidate being the main contributor, strong reference letters, and broader impact of the research outcomes.
- Associate Professor: outstanding research achievements demonstrated by sustained publications at top venues for several years, strong reference letters from leaders in their area, and broader impact of the research outcomes. It is also expected that the candidate has a strong research funding record, visibility in their research community, and leadership skills. Further, it is expected that the candidate provides evidence for effective supervision of graduate students as well as high-quality teaching of graduate and undergraduate courses.
- Full Professor: outstanding research achievements demonstrated by sustained publications at top venues over their career, strong reference letters from top leaders in their area, and broader impact of the research outcomes. It is also expected that the candidate has a strong research funding record and has managed multiple large-scale research projects. The candidate should be an established leader in their research community, and they should have made significant contributions to graduate student supervision and high-quality teaching of graduate and undergraduate courses.
