Juvenile Stature Estimation

This webpage provides a free-to-use Excel file for estimating the stature of juvenile skeletal remains. The measurement protocol for the method can be found in the pdf of the published paper next to the Excel file.

The method is based on a sample of 142 children from the Hamann-Todd Human Osteological Collection and New Mexico Decedent Images Database. By combining individuals from two collections, the method contains a wider range of human variation and thus is more inclusive. As the method is non-specific, it does not rely on previous estimations of age, sex, ancestry, or other group statuses.

This method uses the maximum diaphyseal lengths of the humerus, radius, ulna, femur, and tibia to estimate stature in centimetres. The 5 equations apply to individuals 12 years of age and younger.
