Admission to the MA Program

Students wishing to pursue the Research-Creation specialization must apply to the Department of English MA Program and be accepted through the regular application process. Specialization in Research-Creation

Upon admission to the Department of English MA Program, students can elect to pursue a specialization in Research-Creation. There is no separate application procedure for the specialization, but students must ensure that they satisfy the necessary requirements.

Students are strongly advised to declare their intention to pursue the specialized MA by the end of their second semester of the program by completing and submitting the Declaration Form to the Research-Creation Coordinator. Students are also encouraged to consult with the Research-Creation Coordinator about course selection and, where applicable, the development of a research-creation project.

Requirements for the Specialization in Research-Creation

The Research-Creation specialization can be completed as either a course work option or a research project option. All students in the specialization take ENGL 825, Studies in History, Theory and Practice of Research Creation, which provides grounding in the histories, theoretical foundations, and methodological approaches of research-creation as a scholarly and creative practice. 

Students in the course work option complete ENGL 880 and ENGL 881, ENGL 825, and the additional graduate course work required for the MA. In addition to ENGL 825, at least eight units must be Research-Creation-designated courses. 

Students in the research project option complete ENGL 880 and ENGL 881, ENGL 825, and the additional graduate course work required for the MA, including at least four additional units of Research-Creation-designated course work, as well as ENGL 882, the MA Project (10 units). The Research-Creation Coordinator must approve the project's Research-Creation designation. The precise scope and form of the project are developed by the student in consultation with their supervisory committee. 

Students are strongly advised to declare their intention to pursue the specialization by the end of their second semester by completing and submitting the Declaration Form to the Research-Creation Coordinator. Students are expected to complete the MA program requirements in four terms.
