Degree completion timeline
The Graduate Liberal Studies program requires students to complete the degree within three to four years from the start of the program. The master of arts degree requires a demanding program of reading and writing consistent with graduate-level education.
Students with major family or work commitments are advised to undertake the program at the rate of one seminar per each fall and spring term.
Seminar courses meet for three hours one evening on a weekly basis. Students in the first year of the program should plan to attend pre-class dinners and other activities that may be scheduled to encourage a community of learning. Students admitted to the program are expected to attend a short introductory seminar during a weekend in the summer preceding their beginning fall term.
GLS completion by term
Students may begin the program only in the fall term. All graduate students at SFU are required to be enrolled in each of the three semesters per academic year or to request a leave of absence.
The extended essay and project options can be undertaken during the summer at the later stages of course work or following completion of six courses. Students will continue through their coursework, after which they will begin their project or extended essays and enroll in the project/essay course.
