Math at IRMACS

Visualization research

I can undoubtedly say that during the last five years that I have spent at SFU, IRMACS has been the best part of my stay here as a grad student. The small meeting rooms provide me an excellent space to discuss various mathematical problems with my fellow students. We also have our number theory seminars at IRMACS where using technology we have video conferences with the other number theory people in western Canada. Finally, I would like to thank everyone who has made IRMACS a sucess and for which I had the pleasure to experience such facilities. Himadri Ganguli, Department of Mathemaitcs, Simon Fraser University, 2012
I am deeply grateful to the IRMACS Centre for providing an office during my sabbatical year. As an architect, I appreciated IRMACS' careful and subtle resolution of the tension between scholarly and collaborative space. Experientially and spatially, IRMACS reminds me of Louis Kahn's Salk Institute, one of the icons of the Modern Movement and itself a great research facility. Personally, I was able to partake in IRMACS' dizzying array of seminars as I wished, but to spend the large part of my time there writing an interdisciplinary book on mathematics in design. In particular I am indebted to Peter Borwein, Pam Borghardt, Brian Corrie at IRMACS for their friendly grace as collegial hosts. Robert Woodbury

The IRMACS open and flexible space has been absolutely essential to our project as is has been used by both graduate students and visitors for our project. They are vital as places where our out-of-country collaborators can work and at the same time communicate with us. They have all commented positively on the space available and wished they had similar space in their institutions. Martin Zuckermann

A major loss without IRMACS would be the collaboration tools. Undoubtedly, such a loss would quite strongly negatively impacted my research, and the management of my forestry research team. It would also have impacted students' training across Canada and the loss of sharing of expertise in spatial statistics and other areas. Charmaine Dean, Deaprtment of Statistics and Actuarial Science, SFU

IRMACS Centre gave me the possibility to give presentations and advertise my research both inside and outside SFU. I am a regular user of IRMACS facilities. I was also able to attract students to my lab by using IRMACS infrastructures. Carlo Menon, School of Engineering, SFU

Our computational discoveries, especially in the field of spatiotemporal chaos, would not have been possible without access to multiprocessor computational facilities that allowed the long-time, large-scale, memory-intensive numerical integration of multiple partial differential equations simultaneously. The IRMACS Centre with its meeting space, easy to use and reliable technology, and knowledgeable and friendly staff provides a perfect research environment. Our group is relatively small and the IRMACS Centre provided us with a room of a perfect size for our meetings. Also, the IRMACS Centre helped us to solve a problem of hosting our national and international visitors. It is a question how we would solve this problem if the IRMACS Centre did not exist. I have spent two years at SFU as a postdoctoral fellow. While I was "a neighbor" to IRMACS (I was employed jointly at Math and CS departments), I did certainly benefit from having IRMACS around. We were using IRMACS lecture and seminar rooms frequently, making use of the convenient technology they offer. And I was really stunned by the Coast-To-Coast lecture series, which offered me the chance to attend a lecture taking place on the other side of the country. Last, but not least, during my stay at SFU we created a collaborative website devoted to open problems in mathematics (garden.irmacs.sfu.ca) and we were very glad that IRMACS kindly offered their support to the project. Use of the IRMACS facilities has been essential in order to process the large data sets from the in-situ spectrometer and the airborne imagery (this coming year). Having computer access to Matlab and IDRISI has been very useful for us to prepare the publications and to look at the data.  The conference room facilities have also been important for our meetings with the Canadian Police Research Centre representatives. It provided a professional location with the tools that we needed in order to communicate our results so far and the work that is planned for upcoming years. Lynne Bell

I really appreciated excellent conditions for research offered by the center. I hope I will have lots of opportunities to come back in future and my visits will be as fruitful as the previous ones. Daniel Kral

Our computations required approximately one year of CPU time, but using the IRMACS resources they were completed in just two weeks, running sieving programs on up to 75 processors per night on the IRMACS network of G5 computers.

I found the IRMACS Centre to be a wonderful place for research and collaboration in computation and mathematics, and I hope to visit the Centre again in the future.

The facility enabled us to initiate more enhanced videoconferences with our collaborators. In part, these collaborative discussions helped us obtain the Genome Canada Pathogenomics Project grant awarded this past year (August 2005).

The IRMACS infrastructure has significantly improved our ability to provide a state of the art environment for electronic, collaborative discussions.
