| I can undoubtedly say that during the last five years that I have spent at SFU, IRMACS has been the best part of my stay here as a grad student. The small meeting rooms provide me an excellent space to discuss various mathematical problems with my fellow students. We also have our number theory seminars at IRMACS where using technology we have video conferences with the other number theory people in western Canada. | I am deeply grateful to the IRMACS Centre for providing an office during my sabbatical year. As an architect, I appreciated IRMACS' careful and subtle resolution of the tension between scholarly and collaborative space. Experientially and spatially, IRMACS reminds me of Louis Kahn's Salk Institute, one of the icons of the Modern Movement and itself a great research facility. Personally, I was able to partake in IRMACS' dizzying array of seminars as I wished, but to spend the large part of my time there writing an interdisciplinary book on mathematics in design. | A major loss without IRMACS would be the collaboration tools. Undoubtedly, such a loss would quite strongly negatively impacted my research, and the management of my forestry research team. | The IRMACS Centre with its meeting space, easy to use and reliable technology, and knowledgeable and friendly staff provides a perfect research environment. Our group is relatively small and the IRMACS Centre provided us with a room of a perfect size for our meetings. | I have spent two years at SFU as a postdoctoral fellow. While I was "a neighbor" to IRMACS (I was employed jointly at Math and CS departments), I did certainly benefit from having IRMACS around. We were using IRMACS lecture and seminar rooms frequently, making use of the convenient technology they offer. And I was really stunned by the Coast-To-Coast lecture series, which offered me the chance to attend a lecture taking place on the other side of the country. | Use of the IRMACS facilities has been essential in order to process the large data sets from the in-situ spectrometer and the airborne imagery (this coming year). Having computer access to Matlab and IDRISI has been very useful for us to prepare the publications and to look at the data. The conference room facilities have also been important for our meetings with the Canadian Police Research Centre representatives. | Our computations required approximately one year of CPU time, but using the IRMACS resources they were completed in just two weeks, running sieving programs on up to 75 processors per night on the IRMACS network of G5 computers. I found the IRMACS Centre to be a wonderful place for research and collaboration in computation and mathematics, and I hope to visit the Centre again in the future. |

| The facility enabled us to initiate more enhanced videoconferences with our collaborators. In part, these collaborative discussions helped us obtain the Genome Canada Pathogenomics Project grant awarded this past year (August 2005). The IRMACS infrastructure has significantly improved our ability to provide a state of the art environment for electronic, collaborative discussions. |
