After 13 years of devoted service, Ms. Pam Borghardt's role as the Managing Director of the IRMACS Centre ended on Thursday, November 10, 2016. The IRMACS Centre will change as we know it but the spirit of IRMACS - a spirit of openess and innovation and of creative collaboration - will live on through all of the past and present members and staff of the Centre.

Dr. Veselin Jungic, the IRMACS Centre's Deputy Director, recently was invited by the Promoters of Experiential and Active Research-based Learning community at the University of Windsor, Windsor, ON, to present at their Distinguished Speakers Seres. The title of his presentation was "The Math Catcher Outreach Program".

The IRMACS community gathered together to thank Kelly Gardiner and Zena Bruneau, long time members of the IRMACS staff, for all of their hard work, dedication, and love that they have given to the IRMACS Centre over their many years service.

The B.C. government has awarded $525,000 to support the iReceptor Project, one of the IRMACS Centre's most innovative research initiatives. The iReceptor Project is led by Dr. Felix Breden, the IRMACS Executive Director, and Dr. Jamie Scott, an IRMACS Project Leader.  Congratulations iReceptor Team!

Since the beginning of August 2016, one of the IRMACS Centre's seminar rooms, ASB 10908, has been undergoing a significant renovation. When all work is completed, the popular 908 will have more space and it will be much more user friendly. The room should be fully functioning by the start of the fall semester.

August 15, 2016

The IRMACS Centre will host this year's SFU Symposium on Mathematics and Computation on Monday, August 15.  This is an annual event organized by the Department of Mathematics. It is a great opportunity for faculty, postdocs and students to see some of the frontiers of modern computation in mathematics. It is with great sadness that we share with the IRMACS community that Dr. Jonathan Borwein, the brother of the IRMACS Centre Founding Director Peter Borwein, died suddenly in his sleep on Tuesday, August 2, 2016. Jon was a member of the IRMACS External Advisory Committee, a great friend and supporter of the Centre and he will be greatly missed.

During the months of June and July 2016 the IRMACS Centre will host an international group of mathematicians and computing scientists working on the project titled "Summer of Graph Algorithms at SFU". The project is initiated and coordinated by Professor Pavol Hell, a long term IRMACS leader.

On May 18, 2016 at 1:30, the IRMACS Centre's project leaders and researchers will have an opportunity to meet with Mark Roman, SFU CIO, and his team to discuss the future of research technical support in general at SFU and more specifically how the requirements of the current IRMACS project members will be met through the Big Data transition period.
