SFU Flu Vaccination Clinics
Keep yourself healthy and productive this winter! Health & Counselling Services will be providing Flu vaccination clinics at all three SFU campuses this fall. Vaccinations cost $20 per person unless you qualify for free vaccination (find out if you qualify at www.fraserhealth.ca). If you are eligible for the free vaccine, please bring your care card to the clinic.  Pregnant women will also need to bring a doctor's note to receive vaccination.

SFU Mammogram Clinics
The Screening Mammography Program is offering free mammogram clinics to all BC women ages 40 - 79. Screening mammograms are for women with no sign of a breast problem (see your health care provider immediately if you find a lump or any unusual changes in your breast). By age 50, women should make screening mammograms part of their regular health routine - every two years. No doctor's referral is needed and an appointment takes about 15 minutes.

11. Should you be vaccinated against Meningococcal Meningitis?

Meningococcal Meningitis is a serious illness which can cause severe complications and in some cases death.  Both the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) and the American College Health Association (ACHA) recommend that college and university students, especially first year students living in residence, be vaccinated against meningococcal disease. An Evaluation Committee from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU) will visit October 12-14 to assess the University’s suitability as a candidate for accreditation with the organization. It's the 31st anniversary of Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope. Join in the Terry Fox Walk/Run on September 21 to remember his achievements and to celebrate his courage, determination and humanitarian drive.

Following the presentation, President Petter and a piper will lead all walk/run participants in a procession to the Terry Fox statue in the Quadrangle where the walk/run will begin. Fresh fruit will be available at the end of the event.

Choose the 2.8 kilometre walk or the 4.4 kilometre run.

There is a walk on the same day from the Vancouver campus Harbour Centre to the Terry Fox Monument at BC Place, and for the first time, Surrey campus will be organizing a walk from the campus mezzanine to Holland Park.

Undergraduate Semester in Dialogue
Are you an undergraduate looking for an exciting and innovative way to learn? Are you interested in learning with students from post-secondary institutions outside your own? Apply now for the spring 2012 Undergraduate Semester in Dialogue:

Semester in the City

This 15 unit (DIAL 390, 391, 392) full time course will be held at Vancouver's CityStudio. It is open to students from six Vancouver post-secondary institutions (SFU, UBC, BCIT, Langara, Emily Carr, VCC). Students will work full-time as a cohort with the City of Vancouver to implement Greenest City 2020 urban sustainability strategies and focus projects towards meeting these goals. The best and brightest students will be selected from interdisciplinary areas represented by all post secondary institutions; geography, health science, engineering, planning, social sciences, arts, business, food systems and design.

The Spring 2012 CityStudio cohort will focus on the neighbourhood scale of implementing demonstration projects related to Greenest City Goals of: Access to Nature, Local Food, and Green Economy.

The cohort will meet in the studio (located under Cambie Bridge near Olympic Village) five days/week, Monday - Friday from 9:30am - 3:30pm.

5. Financial Aid and Awards - changes effective Fall 2011

  1. Changes to Student Loans for BC students
    The governments of Canada and BC are integrating their full-time student financial assistance programs (Canada Student Loans and BC Student Loans) to simplify your borrowing experience. Whether you have previous BC student loans or you are a first-time applicant, you will be affected. For further information, see http://www.aved.gov.bc.ca/studentaidbc/integration.htm.

  2. Changes to Work-Study and Bursary assessments
    Financial Aid and Awards will be implementing changes to our bursary and work-study assessment processes to address the growing financial need of our students. This may affect your funding eligibility. Application period: August 29 to September 16.

  3. Changes to Scholarships and Awards applications for undergraduate students
    A new online application for SFU undergraduate scholarships and awards is now available for the Fall 2011 term. To access the online application, log in to the Student Information System (http://sis.sfu.ca). Click on "Student Center", then click on the link "Apply for Scholarships/Awards". Application period: August 2 to September 16.

1. U-Pass BC (www.sfu.ca/upass)

As you may know, the U-Pass program has changed. Starting in late August you will obtain a new U-Pass BC card each month at any of our three campuses.But before you can get your first pass, you must update your current SFU student ID card's magnetic stripe. To update your student ID card, bring it to the Registrar and Information Services front counter at any campus. See students.sfu.ca/contact.html

 

2. Financial Aid and Awards - Important Changes Effective Fall 2011

  1. Changes to Student Loans for BC Students
    The governments of Canada and BC are integrating their full-time student financial assistance programs (Canada Student Loans and BC Student Loans) to simplify your borrowing experience. Whether you have previous BC student loans or you are a first-time applicant, you will be affected. For further information, see http://www.aved.gov.bc.ca/studentaidbc/integration.htm.

  2. Changes to Work-Study and Bursary Assessments
    Financial Aid and Awards will be implementing changes to our bursary and Work-study assessment processes to address the growing financial need of our students. This may affect your funding eligibility. Application period: August 29th to September 16th.

  3. Changes to Scholarships and Awards Applications for Undergraduate Students
    A new online application for SFU undergraduate scholarships and awards is now available for the Fall 2011 term. To access the online application, log in to the Student Information System (sis.sfu.ca). Click on "Student Center", then click on the link "Apply for Scholarships/Awards". Application period: August 2nd to September 16th.

4. Remembering Melanie O'Neill

All Simon Fraser University faculty, staff and students are invited to a celebration of life in memory of professor Melanie O'Neill. The event is being held August 8 at the Diamond Alumni Centre, SFU Burnaby, from 3 pm to 6 pm.

"Melanie was a force. She lived life with passion - both scientifically and personally," says B. Mario Pinto, SFU VP Research. "She gave freely of her time to students, convinced that they could rise to higher levels. She was a caring person who always saw the good in people and managed to ignore their faults. Melanie will be sadly missed but never forgotten."

Please join us in remembering Melanie and celebrating her life. Light refreshments will be provided.

A final version of the strategic vision will be submitted to the Senate and Board of Governors for approval in October/November 2011, with an anticipated release date to follow in January 2012. 4. Deadline Approaching for C.A.R.E. SFU Global Travel Award Program
Thinking of working (Co-op) or volunteering abroad with a not-for-profit organization? There is a new award to help you get there! The C.A.R.E. award distributes Asia Miles points to cover the cost of your airfare. So if you you have a humanitarian trip in mind, PLAN AHEAD. 5. SFU International closures
SFU International will be closed for Advising on Friday June 24 so that all International Student Advisors can take part in an off-site retreat.  The entire SFU International office will be closed on Monday June 27.  On both days, the international advising email will be monitored for emergencies: intl_advising@sfu.ca.

6. World Films
The SFU International World Films Program is an ongoing series that allows students to experience the visual representations of societies of the world through film. A festival of feature films will be screened and discussed, with a variety of social, political and cultural issues being addressed.  This program is open to all SFU students.

8. Financial Aid and Awards - Work-Study Application - Fall 2011
The online Work-Study Application will be open for the Fall 2011 term starting Monday July 11. The deadline to apply and submit your completed application will be Friday July 22, 2011

To apply, please log in to the Student Information System at sis.sfu.ca - Then click Self Service, Student Center, Apply for Bursaries/Work Study. 

Please note that all students who apply during the Work-Study application period will be assessed for eligibility for Work-Study and will automatically be reviewed for bursary funding at a later period in the new term. If you are interested in applying for bursary funding only and not Work-Study, please apply during the Bursary Only period which will happen closer to the start of term.

There will be some significant changes impacting BC students who apply for student loan funding from StudentAid BC. The Canada and BC Student Loan programs will be integrating. 11. Hockey fan?

You are invited to watch the Vancouver Canucks vs Boston Bruins in the Stanley Cup Finals at the Burnaby campus.

The games will be broadcast on a large screen in Room B9200 in the south concourse of AQ on all scheduled game days. Puck drops at 5 p.m. on June 1, 4, 6 and 8 (and June 10, 13 and 15 if necessary). Bring friends and family and wear your game day colours and cheer for your favourite team (Go Canucks Go!).

Financial Aid and Awards - Bursary Only Application Deadline

The Bursary Only Application will open for Summer 2011 on Monday May 2. The deadline to apply and submit your completed application is Friday May 20
To apply, please log in to the Student Information System at sis.sfu.ca and go to Student Center: Apply for Bursaries/Work Study. (This is a Bursary Only period, so you will not be assessed for Work Study during this time.) If you applied during the March Work-Study application period for the Summer term, please do not apply again. Your application will automatically be reviewed for bursary funding for the Summer term. You will be notified whether or not you will receive funding during approximately the seventh week of classes.

The Undergraduate Scholarship application deadline for continuing undergraduate students for the Summer 2011 term is Friday May 20.

Swim to the moon for cystic fibrosis!
The Cystic Fibrosis Canada Swim-a-rama happens this Sunday, March 20 at the SFU Aquatic Centre.

The objective of the swim is for all participants to collectively accumulate the maximum number of laps or distance in one hour. The distance between the Earth and the Moon is 384,403 km. Our 2011 goal is to collectively swim 100 km and reach beyond the atmosphere!

The swim marathon will be followed by other fun activities such as a build a boat team competition (11:15 am), duck pond games, and the best costume dive contest (11:30 am). We will finish with a BBQ for everyone and presentations / prizes around noon. All swimmers regardless of age or ability are welcome to participate. Over the years, the cystic fibrosis Swim-a-ramas have raised over $350,000 for cystic fibrosis!

For Archaeology students

Effective April 1, SFU Senate and Board of Governors have approved the department of Archaeology to become part of the Faculty of Environment, moving from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. New students will be admitted to the Faculty of Environment for the Fall 2011 term. Continuing students will be moved to the new Faculty prior to the start of the Fall 2011 enrollment period in July. Students who plan to graduate by the end of the Spring 2011 term will graduate from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at June Convocation.

After May 2011, students enrolled in Archaeology degree, certificate and diploma programs will then receive their credentials in the Faculty of Environment; the first convocation ceremony reflecting this change will be October 2011.

- If you DO NOT have a Residence application currently on file, you DO NOT need to submit one and pay the $50 application fee.
- IF you are selected to receive an offer, we will attempt to contact you. If we are able to make contact with you, we will advise you to complete the Residence application immediately. If you complete the application immediately, we will then be able to send you an offer of Residence.
