Research

Get involved

We encourage our undergraduate students to develop and pioneer knowledge by conducting research in engineering science. This first foray into research can also help you decide whether graduate school will be your next step.

As an undergraduate, you will have the opportunity to actively participate in research and make connections with top engineering science researchers. Among the opportunities available to you are:

  • Directed studies: submit written or project-based work in your area of research interest with the guidance of a faculty member.
  • Special labs: laboratory research outside normal course offerings, overseen by a faculty member.
  • NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Awards: paid research under the guidance of a faculty member.
  • VPR Undergraduate Student Research Awards: paid research under the guidance of a faculty member.
  • Honours thesis: a research based project that demonstrates the student’s skill in their chosen field.
  • Concurrent Masters program.

Why research matters to you

Engineering science research impacts every imaginable aspect of society, from healthcare to telecommunications and from touchscreens to green technologies. At SFU, you will develop solutions to complex problems and interact with faculty and graduate students undertaking world-leading research projects. Our pioneering research programs also reflect industry needs, providing invaluable exposure to industrial research and development.
