PILAR is working with five First Nations communities in British Columbia:

Adams Lake Indian Band
Cowichan Tribes
Katzie First Nation
Tla’amin Nation
Witset First Nation

The project has established research agreements with each community. These cover research processes, methods, data sharing and knowledge exchange in line with community and OCAP principles.

A Community Research Associate has been hired in each community in order coordinate research activities, advise the FNHA-SFU research team and act as a liaison. Community members will be engaged in all stages of the research process, from design to analysis to dissemination. Approval will be sought before findings are published or shared outside the community.

Potential research activities include:
    • Community engagement meetings
    • Interviews
    • Focus Groups
    • Surveys

The aims the project are to:

 1. Increase understanding of commercial tobacco use in each community and across the province
    2. Take action to address commercial tobacco use and improve health and wellbeing in each community and across the province
