Research Interests Sociological theory (feminist and queer); gender and technology; sociology of sport; social issues and movements.
Dr. Ann Travers, Assistant Professor of Sociology and Associate Member in the Department of Women's Studies, received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Oregon (1996). Her book entitled Writing the Public in Cyberspace: Redefining Inclusion On the Net (2000) is an analysis of the ways in which equity of participation is inhibited in public spaces fostered by new information technologies. Dr. Travers' primary areas of expertise include sociological theory, with a special emphasis on feminist theorizing on the liberal democratic public sphere, gender and technology, the sociology of sport and leisure, and social issues and movements. Dr. Travers' current research activities reflect a continued interest in the social impact of information technology and the significance of organized sport in constructing gender identity. These areas of interest reflect a drive to develop an understanding of the ways in which social practices create insiders of some and outsiders of others. SFU DISCOVERY PARKS SSHRC GRANT |
