Term Community Engagement and Outreach Librarian

The Public Knowledge Project invites applications for a Term Community Engagement and Outreach Librarian. Reporting to the PKP Director of Operations, the incumbent will be responsible for supporting PKP's mission of increasing the quality, diversity, and reach of scholarly publishing.  This is a full-time (1 FTE) Librarian term position (leave backfill) supported by external funds.

This is a critical role at PKP that is responsible for building and maintaining relationships with PKP’s international community and partners, managing PKP's Membership Program and coordinating PKP’s community outreach and education programs. This role is intended to grow PKP’s capacity by soliciting and enabling contributions, both financial and in-kind, from PKP’s wide-ranging community, including users of its software and services, software developers, partners working on aligned initiatives and projects, organizations with aligned goals, and funders. The successful candidate will be able to serve as a representative of PKP in a wide range of settings, be adept at engaging with PKP’s diverse community, and capable of developing and overseeing strategies for PKP to engage with its community more broadly.

SETTING

PKP is a global initiative dedicated to improving the scholarly and public quality of research primarily through the provision of open-source software such as Open Journal Systems (OJS), Open Preprint Systems (OPS) and Open Monograph Press (OMP). As of 2023, over 44,000 journals are using OJS as their article submission review and publishing platform. PKP supports several publishing related services such as the PKP Preservation Network and ongoing work in XML authoring. PKP is also involved in a number of research projects and provides online educational courses and related resources on scholarly publishing. ASSIGNMENT

  • Build close working relationships with PKP stakeholders, including community members, national and international organizations, and funding agencies.
  • Develop effective plans, policies, procedures, and activities based on current research and best practices to engage members.
  • Assist in the coordination of governance bodies across PKP, especially the Members Committee.
  • Support the Communications Team and PKP liaisons to the interest groups and facilitate work by the Community Team.
  • Liaise with open infrastructure partners on collaborative projects.
  • Communicate effectively with contributors to ensure that they are matched with suitable, meaningful, and satisfying contribution activities.
  • Evaluate, review, and report on PKP’s membership and education activities.
  • Explore and implement new methods to raise funds.
  • Plan and coordinate events (e.g., conferences, webinars, and development Sprints).
  • Advance the values and goals outlined in the PKP Strategy document.
  •  Actively foster an environment of collegiality, respect, and teamwork.
  • Represent PKP at local, national, and international meetings, conferences, and events.
  • Manages the publication of a quarterly, digital, community newsletter.
  • Maintain currency with developments in scholarly communication and participate in relevant professional organizations.\
  • Conduct ongoing community learning needs assessments.
  • Develop community learning materials based on current pedagogical research and best practice.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Master's degree in Library or Information Studies from an ALA accredited program, or its equivalent.
  • Three (3) or more years’ experience in outreach or community development and education, preferably in an academic or non-profit environment.
  • Strategic understanding and knowledge of trends in one or more of the following: higher education, academic libraries, open research infrastructure, and scholarly publishing.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing educational and training materials.
  • Experience with any of the following: successful fundraising activities, coordinating in-kind contributions, grant writing, and/or recruiting donors.
  • Ability to recognize, respect, and work effectively with individuals and groups with diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain effective working relationships across multiple and diverse institutions, across levels within organizations from specialist to executive level.
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to changing environments and multiple deadlines, and to work well under pressure with discretion, tact, and good judgment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills, both orally and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and recognize and anticipate what needs to be done.
  • Willing and able to travel for business several times a year.

  • Second graduate degree in a relevant field of specialization related to education, nonprofit management, or scholarly publishing.

Head, Learning & Engagement | Full-time, Continuing

Simon Fraser University Library invites applications for the position of Head, Learning & Engagement. Reporting to the Associate Dean of Libraries for Academic Engagement and based at the W.A.C. Bennett Library on Burnaby campus, this position will be responsible for providing library-wide strategic leadership for information literacy and overseeing the operational areas of the division, including instruction and open education, student success, and engagement, with emphasis on undergraduate students and communities. Supervising 9 librarians and 3 library assistants, the incumbent will build a vision for Learning & Engagement that advances the priorities of the SFU Library’s 2022-2024 Strategic Plan and will serve as a member of the library-wide leadership team that develops future strategic priorities.

SFU Library is at a critical moment – having recently completed an external review, currently developing a new academic plan, and preparing for the appointment of a new Dean of Libraries. Similarly, the Learning & Engagement division, formerly known as Learning & Instructional Services, is undergoing a transition to rearticulate its vision and scope of services with emphases on accessibility, Indigenization, and critical information literacy. This position will be attractive to a thoughtful and values-driven leader ready to take a justice-oriented and decolonial approach to all areas of their work, and contribute to ongoing efforts to work toward equity, inclusion, and accessibility. We seek an inspiring manager who will actively promote the goals and values of the SFU Library, join in efforts to dismantle systemic barriers throughout the library, and work with Indigenous and non-Indigenous colleagues to advance the university’s and library’s Reconciliation and Indigenization initiatives. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and collaborative skills and a strong user-centered focus. They will be aware of trends in post-secondary teaching and learning and library assessment, and they will be energized by advancing change within a large organization.

ASSIGNMENT

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for the Learning & Engagement division and its service areas, including general information literacy and research skills instruction
  • Supervise a team of 9 faculty librarians (5 subject liaisons and 4 functional roles [Indigenous Initiatives; Teaching & Learning; Engagement & Student Success]), and 3 CUPE library assistants (2.5 FTE)
  • Recruit, train, mentor, develop, and lead staff and faculty, including conducting annual reviews
  • In collaboration with functional librarians, uphold and advance decolonization and Indigenization of library services and programs, commitment to open educational resources and open pedagogy, and community-engaged relationships with students, faculty, and staff
  • Provide leadership for divisional assessment, prioritizing patron-centric service evaluation and evidence-informed decision-making
  • Collaborate with librarians and staff in the Academic Engagement portfolio and throughout the library to advance engagement and communication with undergraduate students
  • Monitor and advocate for the Learning & Engagement divisional budget, working closely with library administration
  • Incorporate SFU Library’s commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and decolonial practices into all planning and activities
  • Serve as an active member of SFU Library leadership teams and participate in planning and development activities for the Library, Learning & Engagement, and liaison librarians

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in Library or Information Studies from an ALA accredited program, or its equivalent
  • Minimum of 5 years professional library experience

ASSIGNMENT

  • Under the direction of the Associate Dean of Libraries, Digital Strategy, and in collaboration with members of the Data Services team, provide research data services to researchers and others through consultations and workshops;
  • Assist in the development of institutional policies and procedures related to research data management;
  • Work with researchers and others to devise and implement strategies for long-term data curation;
  • Provide feedback to researchers and support staff on their data management plans;
  • Work with colleagues in the Library and across related campus research units to support SFU researchers with data management, and publisher and grant funder requirements;
  • Encourage and facilitate informed data deposit in appropriate research data repositories or disciplinary platforms, including SFU’s research repository Summit;
  • Collaborate with librarians to support and inform their regular communication with departments, keeping them current with important RDM developments;
  • Maintain a collection of Library web guides that serve as a brief introduction to research data management;
  • Work with Library staff on project teams and committees;
  • Maintain currency with developments and best practices in the profession and in the field of research data management, and participate in relevant professional associations, conferences, workshops and other events;
  • Incorporate SFU Library’s commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and decolonial practices into all Research Data Management services planning and activities;

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with platforms used to manage research data, e.g. Federated Research Data Repository (FRDR), Dataverse, Islandora;
  • Experience organizing and delivering workshops;
  • Second advanced degree in a data-intensive discipline would be an asset.

About BC ELN

BC ELN is a partnership between the Province of British Columbia and its post-secondary libraries. ASSIGNMENT

Working closely with the Executive Director and consortium team, the Librarian will:

  • Support BC ELN service areas as needed, including:
    • Illume provincial interlibrary loan service.
    • Arca provincial digital repository service.
    • AskAway provincial chat reference service.
  • Under the direction of service coordinators, develop communications targeting users, resource teams, committees, vendors, and stakeholders, including the creation and administration of online surveys/questionnaires, and short, online training videos for various BC ELN services.
  • Assist with member engagement such as events, communities of practice, orientation/training, etc.
  • Provide frontline support and technical troubleshooting to partner library staff.
  • Support the ongoing content updates on the BC ELN and eHLbc Drupal websites.
  • Serve on internal BC ELN committees and working groups.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Familiarity with content development tools, including graphic design tools (e.g. InDesign), marketing communications (e.g. Constant Contact), and video editing (e.g. Adobe Premier).
  • Experience delivering training or instruction.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current and emerging library and information systems, educational tools, and databases.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

This is a full-time continuing Librarian position, available immediately. The position is hybrid, primarily working out of the BC ELN offices at SFU Burnaby Campus.

BC ELN employees are appointed under appropriate SFU employee agreements.

In accordance with B.C.’s Pay Transparency Act, the expected base salary range for this role (exclusive of pension and benefits) is $85,619 to $91,979 CAD per year.
