Tenure-track Faculty Postitions Rank: Assistant or Associate Professor

The School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University (SFU) invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The School invites, and encourages, applications from women and underrepresented groups in all areas of computing science. Awards that are specifically targeted to support women candidates, including salary and research support packages of up to $250,000 over five years, are also available.  

The School has a preference for candidates specializing in the following research areas: 

  • Cybersecurity 

  • Natural language processing

  • Software engineering

Recently celebrating 50 years of computing science at SFU, the School has grown to become one of the top computer science departments in Canada as well as enjoying a strong international reputation.   SFU is located in metro Vancouver, one of the most livable areas in North America.

Successful candidates are expected to have strong research records and demonstrate commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and graduate student supervision; including the demonstration of creating inclusive classrooms and/or recognition of needs in support of a diverse student body.   The School will consider applications at the Assistant and Associate Professor rank with the following expectations: 

  • Assistant Professor: excellent research achievements demonstrated by publications at top venues with the candidate being the main contributor, strong reference letters, and broader impact of the research outcomes shown, for example, by research awards, citations, open-source tools used by peers, and/or technology transfer to industry. 

  • Associate Professor: outstanding research achievements demonstrated by sustained publications at top venues for several years, strong reference letters from leaders in their area, and broader impact of the research outcomes shown, for example, by research awards, citations, open-source tools used by peers, and/or technology transfer to industry. It is also expected that the candidate has a strong research funding record, visibility in their research community, and leadership skills. Further, it is expected that the candidate provides evidence for effective supervision of graduate students as well as high-quality teaching of graduate and undergraduate courses. 

Successful candidates must hold a PhD in computer science or a closely related field by the employment start date; however, PhD candidates with solid indication of imminent completion of their PhD degree may be hired at the rank of Instructor and will be promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor upon completion of their PhD. 

Faculty salaries at SFU are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the SFU Faculty Association. Exceptional candidates may be considered for endowed Research Chairs, with additional salary and research support.

A reasonable estimate for salary range if the successful candidate will be starting as an Instructor is $128,340 – 134,700 (dependent on experience and inclusive of Market Differential).

A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role at the Assistant Professor rank is $134,700 – $163,322 (dependent on experience and inclusive of a Market Differential).

Candidates with experience commensurate with higher rank may also be considered for appointment at the Associate Professor rank. A reasonable estimate of the base salary range for this role at the Associate Professor rank is $160,142 - $185,584 (dependent on experience and inclusive of Market Differential).

The School of Engineering Science of the Faculty of Applied Sciences invites applications for a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Engineering at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, dependent on experience. The Successful Candidate

The successful candidate must hold a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related discipline and be registered, or eligible to register, with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (https://www.egbc.ca). They will possess a breadth of expertise and a demonstrated strong track record of scholarly excellence, including an independent, internationally recognized research program, and demonstrated evidence of success and excellence in student supervision and mentorship. The candidate should have a proven track record of developing and delivering educational content, such as undergraduate and graduate course or experience in teaching or training outside traditional academic settings.   Additionally, they must exhibit a commitment through past or potential contributions to fostering a welcoming and supportive community for all, particularly for individuals historically, persistently, or systematically marginalized. The successful candidate will be expected to lead an innovative research program, bridging disciplines across engineering science to address challenges in emerging technologies. They will foster collaborative and interdisciplinary research; articulate a strategic plan for advancing a world-class research program that aligns with ongoing initiatives within the university and engages with local, national, and international networks. Limited-Term (2-Year) Lecturer Position in Electrical and Computer Engineering

Sustainable Energy Engineering: Teaching Stream Faculty (Lecturer)

The School of Sustainable Energy Engineering (SEE) at Simon Fraser University (SFU) Surrey campus—located on the unceded traditional territories, including the Semiahmoo, Katzie, kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem), Kwantlen, Qayqayt and Tsawwassen Nations—is seeking outstanding candidates with proven track records of developing and teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses for a Teaching-Stream Faculty position (Lecturer).

SEE is hosted at SFU's Surrey campus and focuses on the development of solutions for the harvesting, storage, transmission and use of energy, with careful consideration of economic, environmental, societal and policy implications. This inter-disciplinary school addresses the urgent need for engineers trained in new technologies that can change our world by tackling the causes and impacts of climate change. Celebrating its fifth anniversary in 2024, SEE aims to give students the skills and knowledge needed for them to hit the ground running in emerging clean-tech sectors, such as renewable power generation, clean buildings and zero-emission vehicles.

Lecturers are an integral part of SEE and they contribute to its academic mission and implementation of its strategic plan. The successful candidate will report to the SEE Director and their primary responsibilities are teaching and service. 

  1. Teaching: The candidate will teach regular undergraduate and graduate courses and will develop new courses as needed. Possible topics based on the candidate’s expertise are:  
    1. Core engineering courses (engineering materials, mechanics of materials, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, electric circuits and power, computational methods, design and engineering graphics, signals and systems, engineering economics, engineering statistics) 
    2. Specialized courses in engineering (life cycle assessment, sustainable energy engineering, materials for energy systems, energy storage, data analytics and machine learning) 
  2. Service
    1. Involvement in educational leadership. 
    2. Involvement in service to the School of Sustainable Energy Engineering, the University, the academic profession, and the community as appropriate.
    3. Continuing pedagogical/professional development.  
  3. The ideal candidate is expected to possess and demonstrate the following qualifications:
    1. Ph.D. in a relevant field of engineering 
    2. Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
    3. Proven excellence in engineering teaching, as evidenced by one or more of the following: designing and developing engineering courses from the ground up, leading full courses as an instructor, supporting learning as a teaching assistant, or participating in comprehensive faculty training or teaching development programs.
    4. Excellent communication skills and commitment to a team-based working culture.
    5. Eligibility to register as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia within one year of assuming the position. 

The SEE undergraduate program is accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). The successful candidate must either have a Canadian Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) license or be able to secure such qualification within the first year of the initial appointment.  For the requirements for a P.Eng. Faculty salaries at SFU are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the SFU Faculty Association. A reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $98,340 - $119,241 (dependent on experience and inclusive of Market Differential).
