In Memoriam: Professor Daniel Shapiro, Professor Emeritus of Global Business Strategy
We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Daniel Shapiro, Professor Emeritus of Global Business Strategy at SFU’s Beedie School of Business. Danny, as he was fondly known, was a towering figure in the academic community—a passionate scholar, an exceptional teacher, and a cherished colleague, mentor, and friend. His contributions to the university and the field of global business strategy will leave an indelible mark, and he will be profoundly missed.
Danny joined SFU in 1991 and served as dean of SFU Beedie from 2008 to 2014. Over his remarkable career, he demonstrated a steadfast commitment to academic excellence and leadership. As a teacher, Danny was unparalleled, receiving the TD Canada Trust Teaching Award twice—in 1995 and 2002—and earning the prestigious Academy of International Business (AIB) Fellows International Educator of the Year Award in 2014.
Over his distinguished 40-year career, Danny authored five books and more than 150 scholarly publications, including 10 articles following his retirement in 2022. His latest was published in the Journal of International Business Studies (December 2024). His research, cited over 14,000 times, spanned international business and strategy, corporate ownership and governance, foreign investment and emerging markets, and public policy, earning him international acclaim.
Danny was also deeply committed to bridging academia, industry, and public policy, emphasizing the relevance of research to real-world challenges. Under his leadership, the Jack Austin Centre for Asia Pacific Business Studies became a vibrant hub for discussing Asia Pacific issues and a key part of the Global Strategy and Emerging Markets (GSEM) conferences, bringing together scholars, executives, and policymakers to address global challenges.
Beyond his scholarly achievements, Danny’s dedication to SFU Beedie was second to none. As dean, he championed initiatives that strengthened the school’s academic programs and research capacity, leaving a legacy for faculty, staff, and students alike. His passion for teaching extended to executive education, where he designed and delivered impactful programs for managers in both the private and public sectors, in Canada and internationally.
Danny’s warmth, generosity, and unwavering dedication to the academic community and beyond touched the lives of many. His contributions have shaped SFU Beedie and the broader field of international business strategy, ensuring his legacy will endure for generations to come.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Danny’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
