Jack Austin Centre for Asia Pacific Business Studies
Overview
The Jack Austin Centre for Asia Pacific Business Studies at Simon Fraser University is dedicated to advancing research, outreach, and education on business issues that are critical to Canada’s engagement with the Asia-Pacific region. The Centre aims to become a centre of excellence supporting Canada’s diversification toward Asia, bridging rigorous scholarship with real-world policy and business relevance. Its research focuses on three core themes: Canada–Asia business relationships; innovation and entrepreneurship; and environmental sustainability, with particular attention to critical minerals and clean energy investment. Through research, executive education, and public events, the Centre builds Asia-focused business capabilities and promotes deeper understanding of Asian markets and their implications for Canada.
Background
The Centre was named in honour of Jack Austin to recognize his exceptional contributions to Canada–Asia relations. A longtime advocate for stronger ties with Asia, Austin was part of the first Canadian trade mission to China in 1971 and later served as President of the Canada China Business Council and Co-Chair of the Canada China Legislative Association. During his 32 years in the Senate representing British Columbia, he played a key role in shaping Canada’s Asia strategy and advancing dialogue between Canada and Asian partners across business, government, and civil society.
To explore Jack Austin’s remarkable journey—from the West Coast to the heart of Canadian policymaking—and his perspectives on Canada’s relationship with Asia, we invite you to read his memoir, Unlikely Insider: A West Coast Advocate in Ottawa.
Programs
In line with our commitment to future-ready leadership, the Centre has recently launched the Leading Innovation and Capacity in Asia (LINC–Asia) micro-credential program. This forward-looking initiative is designed to equip the next generation of Canadian leaders with strategic insights and practical skills to thrive in the dynamic Asian business environment. Led by a distinguished faculty of global scholars and seasoned practitioners, LINC–Asia supports Canadian organizations in expanding trade, fostering innovation, and advancing market development across Asia.
