The Centre for Comparative Muslim Studies at Simon Fraser University and the Muslims in Canada Archives at the University of Toronto are seeking a motivated, detail-oriented individual to develop the Muslims in Canada Archives (MiCA) project in British Columbia.
The Muslims in Canada Archives (MiCA) is an ambitious project designed to document and share the lives and histories of Muslims across Canada. In partnership with the Centre for Comparative Muslim Studies (CCMS) at Simon Fraser University, the MiCA established a new hub in British Columbia to better document the rich heritage of Muslim communities across Western Canada. In partnership with the CCMS, the Archives is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a part-time Community Outreach Coordinator in Vancouver, BC.
The successful candidate will meet with community members and organizations, conduct site visits, support the management of physical collections, and conduct various outreach-related tasks and duties. This role is ideal for someone passionate about history, archiving, and community engagement, with experience working with and/or knowledge of Muslim communities in British Columbia.
The candidate will report to Lead Archivist Mitra Fakhrashrafi (UT) and Professor Tamir Moustafa (SFU).
Responsibilities
Liaison and coordination
- Identify relevant historical records of Muslim communities held by individuals and organizations.
- Conduct site visits to examine materials and conduct in-person or remote interviews to understand the scope and extent of prospective collection.
- Coordinate stewardship of materials with SFU and Archives team in Toronto.
- Build and maintain relationships with organizers and across Muslim civil society.
Outreach and communication
- Implement outreach strategies to engage individuals and civil society
- Draft and send emails, letters, and other communication to introduce the special collection and explain the donation process.
- Attend community events, meetings, and networking opportunities to promote the Archives.
Documentation and reporting
- Maintain an organized database of individuals and organizations, including contact information and records of communication.
- Document all outreach efforts and interactions with community members for future reference and reporting.
- Work closely with archivist and faculty to understand collection needs and priorities.
- Provide regular updates on outreach activities and progress to the project supervisor.
Qualifications
- Graduate level training, preferably in library science, history, museum studies, public relations, anthropology, sociology, or a related field.
- Strong research and analytical skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse individuals and organizations.
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently.
- Passion for community engagement and preserving history.
- Familiarity with local Muslim communities in British Columbia
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in outreach, fundraising, or community engagement.
- Knowledge of archival practices and special collections.
Work Schedule
- Part-time position requiring approximately 5-15 hours per week.
- Flexible schedule, with some evening and weekend hours as needed for events and meetings.
Compensation
Competitive hourly wage based on experience.
