On November 6, Simon Fraser University’s Gerontology Research Centre hosted its first Research Day on Aging, a celebration of interdisciplinary learning and innovation in the field of aging.

The event brought together students, faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and research staff from across faculties to share their work and spark new collaborations around aging and older adult well-being.

Held in a dynamic flash-talk format, the day featured a series of 5-minute presentations that spanned disciplines, from urban studies and design to health sciences, gerontology, biomedical physiology and kinesiology, healthcare, and policy. This fast-paced structure encouraged interdisciplinary collaboration of ideas and highlighted the breadth of aging-related research happening across the university.

The event opened with a keynote by Dr. Parminder Raina, Professor at McMaster University and Lead Principal Investigator of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA). His presentation, “Showcasing the CLSA Research Platform – Latest Updates on Data Collection, Data Availability & Data Access”, highlighted the study’s latest advancements in data collection and accessibility. Dr. Raina discussed the integration of wearable technology, expanded assessments in cognitive, sensory, and cardiovascular health, and new modules addressing ageism and cannabis use—reflecting evolving priorities in aging research. His insights set the stage for a day of interdisciplinary dialogue and innovation.

Throughout the day, attendees explored topics such as:

  • Aging in Place and Housing Innovation

  • Cognitive Health and Dementia-Inclusive Design

  • Climate Resilience and Environmental Empowerment

  • Longitudinal and Population-Based Research

  • Biological and Physiological Aging

  • Social Participation and Community Engagement

  • Technology and Digital Health

  • Advocacy, Policy, and Lived Experience

The insightful presentations led to an engaging networking lunch and reception, which facilitated new connections and inspired thought-provoking discussions.
