We are currently looking for participants for the following studies.

BIBIMBAP

Why are we doing this study?

To investigate the way infants discrimate sounds

How is this study done?

  • If you agree to participate, this study will take between 30-45 minutes.
  • You will be invited to come to our laboratory in Burnaby.
  • You and your child will be listening to different single syllable sounds  (Video and audio will be recorded; this takes 30-50 minutes).
  • Before you come and after you return home, you will be asked to fill out a questionnaires (at home, online) regarding your language history. (the questionnaire takes between 5-15 minutes.)
  • You will be reached out to once more when your child reaches 24 months of age to fill out an online questionnaire about your child's language development (10 minutes)
  • You will be thanked for your time with a gift packet containing a $30 gift card and a child-sized t-shirt with our laboratory logo on it!

BASEL

Why are we doing this study?

To investigate the way bilingual parents speak to infants in their natural home environment.

How is this study done?

  • If you agree to participate, this study will consist of a meeting over Zoom, 30 minutes for initial questionnaires, and 1 day (16 hours) of passive recording.
  • We will send you a package in the mail with all materials necessay for this project
  • You will be asked to record the audio input of your child's language environment for 16 consecutive hours, with the recording device provided
  • You will then mail all the material back to us using the provided prepaid envelope
  • This study does not require you to visit any of our laboratory locations at any time
  • You will be thanked for your time with a child-sized t-shirt with our laboratory logo on it and a $30 e-gift card

FISH

Why are we doing this study?

To investigate the way parents decribe pictures to infants.

How is this study done?

  • If you agree to participate, this study will take between 45-60 minutes.
  • You will be invited to come to our laboratory in Burnaby.
  • You will be asked to describe pictures to your child and the eye gaze of your child will be tracked (Video and audio will be recorded; this takes 30-50 minutes).
  • Before you come and after you return home, you will be asked to fill out a questionnaires (at home, online) regarding your language history (the questionnaire takes between 5-15 minutes.)
  • You will be reached out to once more when your child reaches 24 months of age to fill out an online questionnaire about your child's language development (10 minutes)
  • You will be thanked for your time with a gift packet containing a $30 gift card and a child-sized t-shirt with our laboratory logo on it!

To investigate the way parents speak to infants and compare their communication style across different languages and cultures.

How is this study done?

  • If you agree to participate, this study will take between 60-90 minutes.
  • You will be invited to come to our laboratory in Burnaby.
  • You will be asked to play with your child while doing specific tasks (Video and audio will be recorded; this takes 30-50 minutes)
  • Before you come and after you return home, you will be asked to fill out 2 questionnaires (at home, online) regarding your language history and cultural background (Each questionnaire takes between 5-15 minutes)
  • You will be reached out to once more when your child reaches 24 months of age to fill out an online questionnaire about your child's language development (10 minutes)
  • You will be thanked for your time with a gift packet containing a $30 gift card and a child-sized t-shirt with our laboratory logo on it!

To investigate children’s ability to identify specific words within continuous speech.

How is this study done?

  • If you agree to participate, this study will take between 30-45 minutes.
  • You will be invited to come to our laboratory in Burnaby.
  • You and your child will be listening to various sentences during testing (Video and audio will be recorded; this takes 30-50 minutes).
  • Before you come and after you return home, you will be asked to fill out a questionnaires (at home, online) regarding your language history. (the questionnaire takes between 5-15 minutes.)
  • You will be reached out to once more when your child reaches 24 months of age to fill out an online questionnaire about your child's language development (10 minutes)

To investigate whether infants respond to different combinations of cues differently.

How is this study done?

  • If you agree to participate, this study will take between 45-60 minutes.
  • You will be invited to come to our laboratory in Burnaby.
  • You will be asked to listen to music while your child attends to images on the screen and the eye gaze of your child will be tracked (Video and audio will be recorded; this takes 45-60 minutes).
  • Before you come and after you return home, you will be asked to fill out a questionnaires (at home, online) regarding your language history (the questionnaire takes between 5-15 minutes.)
  • You will be reached out to once more when your child reaches 24 months of age to fill out an online questionnaire about your child's language development (10 minutes)
