Thinking of Transferring to SFU Linguistics?
The admission requirements for declaring into the SFU Linguistics Major program are a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.25 and a passing grade in SFU LING 220 (or equivalent course from another institution, see below). The continuation requirements for the Major program specify that a CGPA of no less than 2.25 must be achieved once a student has completed 60 units.
Our department maintains friendly accreditation agreements with a number of local institutions. The following sections summarize the long-standing agreements we have with Capilano University, Douglas College, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Langara College, and the University of the Fraser Valley. If you are thinking of transferring to SFU from one of these institutions, you may be eligible to enter our program at an upper-division level so long as you have taken the appropriate lower-division courses.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
- Upon transferring to SFU, your program status will technically be “undeclared”. However, as soon as you have been accepted into SFU and have fulfilled the admission requirements for the LING Major program, you can submit your major declaration by contacting the Linguistics Student Advisor. Please be sure to have your advising transcript at the ready.
- The following sections are based on the information available on the BC Transfer Guide and are current as of April 2026. For the most up-to-date information, please refer directly to the BC Transfer Guide, which is the official resource for course transfer agreements between BC institutions.
- Please note that the college/universities listed below are not the only post-secondary institutions you can transfer from. If you are transferring from another institution, you can review the SFU Admissions page for more information.
- You may transfer up to 60 units from your previous institution to use toward your SFU degree.
- For elective and breadth course planning, please book an appointment with the Student Advisor after you have transferred.
- The following information is specific to transfer credits eligible to be applied to the LING Major program. Please visit the SFU Admissions page for full details on the requirements for admission. Note that the transfer credits listed here can alternatively be applied to other LING programs such as the Extended Minor program.
