Linguistics Graduate Student Colloquium Committee
The Linguistics Graduate Student Colloquium Committee (LING-COCO) was formed in 2024. Their mission is to support student-driven engagement and planning for department colloquia, seminars, poster sessions and other research-related events. Members of LING-COCO volunteer their time to ensure that these events reflect the interests and input of our graduate students. The committee conducts polling to nominate potential research talk speakers, organizes one-on-one meetings with visiting speakers (open to all students including undergraduates), and liaises with other departments in the university to promote our events, among many other tasks. LING-COCO members also brainstorm and drive networking and other opportunities for the Linguistics graduate student community. Additionally, the committee organizes social events such as potluck celebrations and other gatherings.
Recent events include research talks by Tamara Bodden, Barbara Dancygier and Michelle Cohn. The committee works in partnership with UBC Linguistics to jointly organize and take turns hosting a colloquium series known as LinguisticsNOW each Fall term, as well as a graduate studies research symposium known as LinguisticsNEW each Spring term.
