Community Consultation: Disability Accommodation in the Workplace Policy (GP40) Review
This message is sent on behalf of Dilson Rassier, Provost, Vice-President, Academic and Chief Budget Officer, and Yabome Gilpin-Jackson, Vice-President, People, Equity and Inclusion.
Dear University Community,
The Disability Accommodation in the Workplace (GP 40) policy governs disability accommodations in the workplace at Simon Fraser University. The policy responds to the University’s obligations under British Columbia’s Human Rights Code to accommodate employees with disabilities.
In April 2025, community consultation on updates to GP 40 took place over a four-week period. Following substantive work that followed to review and incorporate the feedback collected and in keeping with procedures 2.2.5 of Policy B10, it has been determined that a further second consultation will be beneficial. This will ensure that all community members have the opportunity to share their thoughts on the proposed substantive policy amendments.
What you need to know about this second consultation period:
- If you have already submitted feedback, your response has been tracked and you do not need to submit again.
- We kindly ask you to also include the section number associated with your feedback.
About the proposed policy amendments:
Amendments to GP 40 express our ongoing commitment to accommodating disability in the workplace and reflect current applicable legislation.
The policy was last revised in 2009 and is now being revised to:
- Update the cadence and requirement of medical reporting.
- Clarify the use of the Disability Accommodation Fund and process for funding requests where accommodation costs are prohibitive for departmental budgets.
- Identify the legal and policy authorities referenced in GP 40 to clearly affirm SFU’s commitment to workplace disability accommodations and ensure the policy language aligns with provincial human-rights standards.
- Include the policy sponsors and changes to roles and titles to reflect the individuals and office who are responsible for the implementation of the policy and its associated procedures.
- Reflect the new policy and procedure templates.
We invite you to review the proposed policy amendments.
