Description & Supporting Documentation:

Awards, valued at a maximum of $5000 per year, are available in Fall and Spring terms to full-time Indigenous students pursuing an undergraduate or a graduate degree at Simon Fraser University. Undergraduate students must have completed at least 18 units at the University in order to be eligible to apply. Students must have a demonstrated connection to the Indigenous community. Applicants must be in good academic standing, and have also demonstrated excellence in one or more of: community service and/or cultural contributions to the University, Indigenous and/or general community at large.

Indigenous peoples of Canada are defined in the Constitution Act, 1982, Section 35 (2) as including the Indian, Inuit and Métis peoples of Canada.  This definition has been taken from Statistics Canada, 2013.

The application must include:

  • a resume outlining the details of the applicant's community service and/or cultural contributions;
  • a one-page cover letter that responds to the following question: "How has/will your service and/or cultural contributions demonstrate a positive impact to the University, Indigenous, and/or general community?"; and
  • one or more letter(s) of reference from a community member who can verify the applicant's involvement and/or contribution and speak to the positive impact of the applicant's role.

All supporting documentation must be submitted to the Financial Aid and Awards (faawards@sfu.ca) by the application deadline.

This award will be granted by the Senate Undergraduate Awards Adjudication Committee based upon the recommendations of a sub-committee chaired by the Director, Indigenous Student Centre.
