Transit subsidies, downtown commuting and equity: Findings from recent SFU research
Date:
Tuesday, December 15
Time: 7:00 pm
Location: via Zoom

Join Urban Studies professors Peter V. Hall and Anthony Perl for a presentation and discussion on their recently completed, community-engaged research investigating the impacts of employer-paid transit subsidies on the commuting choices of workers at downtown Vancouver hotels. While the Employer Transit Subsidy Study was completed before the pandemic that has taken such a terrible toll on hotel workers and the entire tourism industry, the study findings will be of interest and helpful to governments, employers and unions as they work towards an equitable and sustainable recovery, as well as to the general public.

More about the study

Presenter:
Professor Peter V. Hall (Urban Studies, SFU)

Peter Hall was the lead investigator for the Employer Transit Subsidy Study. His research program bridges the disciplines of geography, planning and economics, often combining qualitative and quantitative social research methods, to address three areas related to development at the local, urban and regional scales: port cities, seaports and logistics; local labour markets and employment; community and local economic development.

Moderator:
Professor Anthony Perl (Urban Studies and Political Science, SFU)

Anthony Perl was co-investigator for the Employer Transit Subsidy Study. His research crosses disciplinary and national boundaries to explore policy decisions made about transportation, cities and the environment. He has published in dozens of scholarly journals and advised governments in Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, and the United States on transportation, environmental research and policy development.
