Biography

Paddy Smith is the director of the Institute of Governance Studies at Simon Fraser University, where he teaches local, urban and metropolitan governance, global cities and  urban policy issues. He received his doctorate in government from the London School of Economics. He has served on the boards of the Canadian Political Science Association, the Institute of Public Administration of Canada and the BC Political Studies Association. He is also  the co-author of Local Government in Canada and has authored and edited a dozen books on Canadian constitution-making, political parties and elections, law and politics ,as well as articles on Cascadia, global cities, local and metropolitan governance, anti-terrorism and human rights, multilevel governance-policy-making, lobbying, ombuds-offices and other independent legislative officers, as well as local election finance reform. Current research includes Burnaby: The Politics of a City; the Rise of Cities, BC`s 2017 General Election and arguments on constitutionalizing Canada`s urban identity.
