Sequestration in the US and the Canada-US Border

February 28, 2013

I was interviewed today for a clip that ran during the CBC News Vancouver's 5, 5:30, 6, and 11pm shows. The topic?: What would looming budget cuts in the U.S. mean for Canadians crossing the border? In something the U.S. dubbed 'sequestration' up to $1.2 trillion could stand to be cleaved from the federal budget, leaving everything, including border guards, on the chopping block. As I told the CBC, we needn't be too worried: the political climate in the U.S. remains incredibly dramatic, fractious, gridlocked, and tense--cliffs, ceilings, filibusters, and sequesters have become seemingly commonplace in very divided Washington. To that point, a full hatchet-chop of the U.S. programs and services is unlikely; especially unlikely is to see the border and border security first among those to be sacrificed.
