Last week, Taco and Pierre from our group had the incredible opportunity to attend EMH's Annual Forum in Ottawa! This dynamic event featured 22 presentations and 8 panels over two days, bringing together a diverse array of energy sector professionals, modellers, policymakers, government representatives, utilities, grid operators, researchers, and academics. The focus was on discussing the challenges and opportunities associated with achieving a Net-Zero Electricity Sector by 2035.

During the forum, our group proudly showcased our work through three posters and a presentation. Inspired by the wealth of insights, Taco and Pierre are now more determined than ever to contribute to meeting the ambitious but necessary goals for Canada.

A prevailing theme throughout the conference emphasized the increasing importance of flexibility in future energy systems, particularly with the rise of variable renewable resources. Many presenters highlighted the potential of accessing flexibility through distributed energy resources (DERs). We share this perspective, firmly believing that DERs can play a crucial role in ensuring a reliable and affordable supply of energy from sustainable sources.

Another key takeaway was the absence of a "silver bullet" solution. The consensus among participants was that there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, achieving our goals will require conscientious planning and coordination among stakeholders in both local and neighboring regions. It's a collective effort that demands tailored solutions for each balancing area.

Taco and Pierre extend their gratitude to the organizers, EMH, and IRENA for hosting such a fantastic event. Their efforts have catalyzed crucial dialogue surrounding the challenges and opportunities in reaching a Net-Zero Electricity Sector in Canada.
