1950s China's “New Socialist Man”
Please join us for the kickoff talk to our 2019 Fall Colloquium Series. Our first talk will be with Zed Gao, a postdoctoral fellow in our sociology and anthropology department.
His talk will discuss China in the 1950s and how the Cold War struggle and economic burdens of the time lead to the creation of a "New Socialist Man." This utopian figure was to reconstruct Chinese society and a project of thought-reform began with lasting effects.
Zed will discuss this human project through three case studies:
1–Chinese Marxist philosophy
2–Rejection of psychological science
3–Radicalization of education
Develop your perspective to current events by understanding China's history and context.
