May 4th Public Salon Speakers Announced

There are a limited number of complimentary tickets available to SFU students interested in attending a Public Salon, hosted by former Vancouver Mayor Sam Sullivan, on Wednesday, May 4, 2016at 7:30pm to 9:00pm (doors open at 6:30pm) at the Vancouver Playhouse. For details on the event, please see visit

For these complimentary tickets, if interested, please email Lynn at Please note that those receiving complimentary tickets must arrive 30 minutes early (i.e. 7:00pm sharp), or the tickets could be sold. Tickets are distributed on a first come, first serve basis, while quantities last.

The Public Salon is a made-in-Vancouver phenomenon that contributes to the unique civic culture of our city and province.

Speakers for the May 4 Public Salon Include:

  • Journalist John Burns, who was the editor of the Vancouver Magazine, will share his ideas on the future of journalism.
  • Mo Dhaliwal will share his story about how, at the peak of success, he sought to learn more about his roots and travelled to India. Mo was one of the co-founders of the Banghra Festival and will be bringing some musicians and dancers to perform for us.
  • Rafal Gerszak spent 3 years in Afganistan as a photographer and is now working in the Arctic documenting life there.
  • Robert Hare is a Forensic Psychologist who with his team created the Psychopathy Checklist which is used worldwide.
  • Jocelyn Morlock is the composer in residence for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.
  • Eric Peterson is the founder of the TULA foundation, the Hakai Institute and the Hakai Magazine which is doing scientific research along the coast of BC.
  • Brian Scudamore is the founder of 1-800 Got-Junk, a very successful entrepreneur who never finished high school.
  • Professor Mark Winston won the Governor General’s Literacy Award for nonfiction in 2015 for his book “Beetime”
