We are pleased to announce that our Deputy Director, Veso Jungic's recent submission to the NSERC Promoscience fund was successful. Watch for a series of short movies entitled Math Catcher: Mathematics through Aboriginal Storytelling over the next two years. Congratulations to Veso and the grant sponsors; the IRMACS Centre, the Department of Mathematics, the Faculty of Science, and PIMS.

The IRMACS Centre would like to welcome everyone back to the university and to wish all of our students, faculty, staff and collaborators all the best in 2011.  We would also like to welcome Tasha Nathanson to our reception team.  Tasha will be around on Wednesdays and Thursdays so please come by, say hi and introduce yourself.

Dr. Charmaine Dean, an IRMACS Project leader, has been appointed to the NSERC Long-range Plan Steering Committee. The main goal of the Committee is to oversee the development of a long-range plan for research in the mathematical and statistical sciences in Canada for a five- to ten-year period. The long time IRMACS Project leader and SFU physics professor Michael Hayden and his PhD student Mohammad Dehghani Ashkezari, also an IRMACS member, are members of an international team of scientists that have managed, for the first time in history, to capture and hold atomic antimatter. Congratulations to Michael and Mohammad!

Dr. Brian Fisher from SIAT and an IRMACS Leader has been awarded an NSERC Strategic Grant for his proposal titled "Visual analytics for Emergency Management". NSERC Strategic Grants support projects addressing the topics within environmental science and technologies, natural resources and energy, and information and communications technologies. Congratulations Brian!

After spending more than a year at the IRMACS Centre as an IRMACS Visiting Professor, Dr. Kohshi Okumura returns back to the Hiroshima Institute of Technology where he is a Full Professor. In Dr. Okumura's words, "over the last year my collaboration with Dr. Ljiljana Trajkovic, an IRMACS Project Leader, has been exceptionally productive".
