The IRMACS Centre welcomes to the IRMACS community all researchers involved in the Human Evolutionary Studies Program (HESP). The purpose of the HESP is to create an internationally recognized research and training ‘hub’ that will simultaneously advance the integrated understanding of the body, mind, behaviour and social institutions of Homo sapiens within the framework of evolutionary theory. The HESP programme is funded by the SFU Community Trust Endowment Fund.

The first IRMACS Modelling Summer School will be held in the IRMACS Centre from July 4th - July 15th, 2011. The primary goal of this summer school is to introduce students to the advantages of uniting researchers from diverse fields in order to conduct scientific modelling using an interdisciplinary approach. The participants will work on two research problems under the supervision of Dr. Arne Mooers, and Dr. Vahid Dabbaghian.

A sincere welcome to Mr. Vladimir Ortynski who recently joined the IRMACS team and will be around part time (T,W,R). Vlad, a long time member of the SFU IT Services group, will provide help with the general systems administration.  Brian Langdeau will continue to help with desktop support part time (W,R,F) as well. The IRMACS Centre welcomes all participants of the workshop on Computational and Analytical Mathematics in honour of Jonathan Borwein’s 60th Birthday.  Between May 16 - May 20, approximately 85 researchers from around the world will attend JonFest 2011 and explore the current status and connections among various mathematical areas in which Dr. Jonathan Borwein has been active during the last 40 years.

The IRMACS Centre is pleased to host the 10th anniversary celebration of the SFU Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science on May 6th. Over the years the Centre has been the true, research and otherwise, home for many graduate students, faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and visitors of the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science. We congratulate the Department on this important landmark and thank all its members for their commitment to the IRMACS Centre.

Professor Charmaine Dean, one of the founders of the IRMACS Centre, has recently been appointed as the University of Western Ontario Faculty of Science Dean. “Charmaine Dean is a distinguished academic and experienced administrator who will help bolster Western’s reputation as home to one of Canada’s leading research-intensive faculties of science,” says Janice Deakin, Western provost & vice-president (academic). Congratulations, Charmaine, and thank you for your many contributions to the IRMACS Centre.

Dr. Peter Borwein, the IRMACS Founding Director, and Dr. Jonathan Borwein, a member of the IRMACS External Review Committee, have published the book titled, "Experimental and computational mathematics: Selected writings" (PSIpress, 2011.) In reviewer's words, "The Borweins are inarguably the world‘s leading exponents of utilizing state-of-the-art computer technology to discover and prove new and fundamental mathematical results."
