As we wrap up another highly successful year, the IRMACS Centre is pleased to invite you to three events on December 2nd, 2011. The MoCSSy Program Semester End Presentations, 9:00-11:00, the IRMACS Modelling Consortium Open Forum: Showcasing Scientific Modelling at SFU, 11:30-1:00, and the IRMACS Community Christmas Party, 3:00-5:00. Everyone is welcome. Don't forget your food bank donation! |

The popular "Canada Research Chairs Seminar Series at the IRMACS Centre" will end on November 24, 2011. We would like to thank all thirty-seven CRC holders who presented in the series and the more than 2000 members of the wider SFU community who attended the presentations over the past three years. In January 2012 the IRMACS Centre will start a new series entitled "SFU Royal Society of Canada Seminar Series at the IRMACS Centre". |

On November 8, 2011, the IRMACS Centre will host one day workshop "Aboriginal Students in Math and Science: Situations and Solution". The main purpose of the workshop is to further build and strengthen the community of educators who are involved in teaching and promoting, or planning and administrating math and science programs among Aboriginal students. The IRMACS and MoCCSy member Natalia Iwanski received the best paper award in the 2011 European Intelligence and Security Informatics Conference in Athens, Greece. Her paper "Analyzing an Offender’s Journey to Crime: A Criminal Movement Model (CriMM)" is joint work with a group of IRMACS and MoCCSy researchers: P. Brantingham, V. Dabbaghian, R. Frank, and A. During the Fall 2011 Convocation the following IRMACS Centre's members Hayri Ardal, Elizabeth Juarez Colunga, Kevin Doerksen, Ararat Harutyunyan, and Darby Thompson were awarded Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Congratulations and good luck in the future from all of us from the IRMACS Centre! |

Our annual IRMACS Project Leader Meeting is scheduled for October 3rd. The goals of the meeting are to update everyone on the current and future activities in the Centre, to introduce new projects, and to discuss future directions and projects within the Centre with our project leaders. |

The IRMACS Centre welcomes back its members for another busy, exciting, and productive semester! We have a large group of new members whom we wish a successful stay at the IRMACS Centre. With a mixture of happiness and sadness we are saying farewell to the group of our members who recently completed their degrees and are moving on with their careers. Good luck to all of you! |

For the IRMACS Centre the Spring 2011 semester has been a busy time of conferences and workshops. After organizing and hosting the Workshop on Computational and Analytical Mathematics in May, throughout July the IRMACS team was heavily involved in the organization of the very successful WAVES 2011 Conference. In the week of August 8th, the Centre is hosting two events, Computational Math Day 2011 and the joint workshop, 4th ICA Workshop on Geospatial Analysis and Modeling and 2nd ISPRS Workshop on Pervasisve Web Mapping, Geoprocessing and Services. |

The IRMACS Centre is pleased to announce that Mr. Philippe J. Giabbanelli is this year's recipient of the Peter Borwein Annual Graduate Scholarship in Mathematical and Computational Modelling of Complex Systems Award. Mr. Giabbanelli, who completed his M. Sc. in Computing Science at SFU with a GPA of 4.13, will start his Ph.D. studies in the Department of Biological Physiology and Kinesiology under the supervision of Dr. Diane Finegood this fall. Congratulations, Mr. Giabbanelli! |
