Congratulations to SFU Linguistics MA student Phoenix Neuscheler for winning Best Student Poster at the annual Canadian Linguistic Association (CLA) conference. Their poster, co-authored with Dr. Jozina Vander Klok, is titled Reduplication, Applicatives, and Pluractionality in Javanese. 

The CLA was founded in 1954. This year marked the 73rd meeting and took place at the University of Calgary from June 17 to June 19, 2026. Selection of the Best Student Poster award is an important part of the conference. Student posters are considered from all areas of linguistics and from any theoretical perspective. Eligibility criteria include the poster and question period being presented entirely by a student (rather than alongside co-authors), and students must be the first and primary authors of the work. 

CLA representatives praised several aspects of Phoenix’s work. “Phoenix Neuscheler’s poster, Reduplication, Applicatives, and Pluractionality in Javanese, was selected for the award on the basis of its strong and well-organized presentation, as well as the quality of the data being discussed. Judges mentioned that the presentation of the data on the interaction between reduplication and applicatives was fascinating and constituted an impressive feat of elicitation. The presenter was commended by the judges for clearly presenting the work and responding effectively to questions, and the poster generated a notable amount of discussion, debate, and engagement among attendees.” 

Phoenix is humble and gracious in accepting this high praise of their work. “It’s been very satisfying to work on this research with Dr. Jozina Vander Klok over the past several months, and I’ve learned a great deal about conducting linguistic elicitation and analysis. I’m extremely honored and pleased to win this award, and I feel motivated and inspired to continue both this research and my future projects.”
