Scholarships and Awards

Please visit Scholarships and Awards for SFU's grad students on the Dean of Graduate Studies website for more information, terms of reference and timelines on all awards, including:

  • Entrance Scholarships
  • SFU has a limited number of major entrance scholarships for exceptional students.

  • SFU Graduate Fellowships
  • The Graduate Fellowship (GF) is a one-term award normally valued at $6,250. Academic units, however, have the option of awarding partial GFs (.5) valued at $3,125. Applicants may be eligible to receive up to a maximum of two full GFs, or four partial GFs, during an academic year (September 1 - August 31).

  • SFU Private Awards
  • Due in large part to the generosity of our donors, Simon Fraser University can offer a number of private or endowed awards to our graduate students. These awards vary in amount and number depending on the terms of reference of the award, as well as the availability of funds.

  • President's PhD Scholarship
  • The President's PhD Scholarship (PS) rewards PhD students who have made excellent progress in their degree, and who have demonstrated academic excellence, substantial scholarly output and leadership early in their PhD program relative to their peers. The award is intended to provide PhD students with a semester to concentrate full-time on their research.

  • Travel and Research Awards
  • Major External Awards
  • There are three main federal funding agencies (CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC) and a number of provincial funding agencies that offer awards to graduate students. Although applications for these awards are processed through the Office of the Dean of Graduate Studies, the funding agency makes the final decision.
