GUESTS

Convocation is an exciting and proud moment to mark the achievements of our graduates.  To make your attendance go smoothly, please read the details below.

You should note the schedule of dates and times and plan to arrive early on the campus to ensure parking and seating.

We look forward to seeing you.

Transportation

Graduands and guests are encouraged to take public transportation to Convocation ceremonies.  Translink provides excellent service to the University and drops you off very close to the ceremony site. Please see the translink website for transit schedules to SFU Burnaby Campus.

Parking

Parking on campus is limited.  Graduands will be issued parking passes that must be shown in their vehicle to obtain free parking during convocation.  Parking is restricted, please download a convocation parking map for directions to available convocation parking.

There is also parkade parking under Convocation Mall for elderly and disabled guests who require an elevator. If you need a special parking space for anyone with a mobility impairment, identify yourself to SFU security at our Information Centre, noted on our convocation parking map.

If you are a student with a mobility impairment and use a wheelchair, scooter or crutches, we can make special arrangements for you, with a few days' notice. Contact the Centre for Students with Disabilities (778.782.3112) in advance.

Audience seating

There is guest seating on the covered Convocation Mall, right behind the graduating students' seats. No reservations or tickets are necessary, however family and friends should find their seats well before the procession begins.  Only certified guide/service animals are allowed to cross the stage with graduands.   Students should make arrangements with family or friends for child-minding while they are convocating.

Note that the Mall is under cover but open on both ends, and can be quite cold, so audience members should dress warmly. Elderly guests and anyone with special needs regarding seating should identify themselves to any of our ushers on the Mall.

Each convocation ceremony lasts approximately two hours. A reception for graduands and their guests is held in the James Douglas room, directly off the Mall, following each ceremony.
