Indigenous Governance

As part of SFU’s strategic priority to Uphold Truth & Reconciliation, the university has three Indigenous Governance circles. The purpose of the circles is to engage Indigenous members of the internal SFU community and the Host First Nations for SFU’s three campuses in decision-making about Indigenous policies, programs and initiatives at the university.

Establishing Indigenous governance structures is part of the ongoing implementation of the SFU’s Aboriginal Reconciliation Council (ARC) and Pathways recommendations; responds to the TRC’s calls to action and enacts SFU’s obligations under the B.C. DRIPA Action Plan.

SFU Indigenous Governance 2026 Schedule:

Internal Indigenous Council

  • Chaired by Indigenous Executive Lead Chris Lewis

  • Representatives from other Indigenous advisory councils or committees within Faculties

  • Directors with Indigenous-specific positions 

  • Indigenous faculty members from each SFU Faculty

  • Lead staff within Faculties with Indigenous-specific positions

  • An undergraduate student and a graduate student from the First Nations, Metis and Inuit Student Association

  • Designate from the Provost’s Office
