SFU Black Caucus Graduation Celebration 2022

The SFU Black Caucus and SOCA cordially invite you to attend the inaugural Black Graduation Celebration at Simon Fraser University!

This celebration is supported by SFU Students of Caribbean and African Ancestry and endorsed by SFU African Students Association and the Somali Students Association.

Black students over the years have been instrumental in ensuring that there is space and opportunity for Black/African Descent students to be recognized and celebrated for their accomplishments. Each year we will honor our Black undergraduate and graduate students receiving degrees for that calendar year. This year’s celebration includes all graduates from 2020 to 2022 (those who had online graduation ceremonies).

Health XChange - Powered by Pecha Kucha

On June 16, 2022 (4 – 6 p.m.), Health Research BCSFU and Vancouver Foundation will host the fourth annual Health xChange and first Canadian Knowledge Mobilization Forum networking event, asking: “How can youth-led and youth-engaged approaches help to re-define research and knowledge?”

Using a PechaKucha format (20 slides, shown for 20 seconds each), presenters will share stories about how their youth-engaged* research can improve health, social, and/or economic wellbeing for young people.*research led by or done in meaningful collaboration with youth (12 to 29 years)

Led by Tanvi Bhatia, writer, facilitator, and Geist magazine's associate editor, this evening will be a chance to learn from and network with BC youth, researchers, policy-makers and knowledge users who are passionate about using research to improve the wellbeing of young people.

Tickets are by donation! Complimentary tickets are available for youth, students, patient representatives, and others for whom the ticket cost is a barrier to attendance. Light refreshments will be served!

Gynecologic Cancer Initiative Trainee Research Day 2022

The Gynecologic Cancer Initiative Trainee Research Day is a hybrid two-day event on June 13, 2022 and June 14, 2022 to showcase and celebrate trainees in British Columbia who are conducting research on gynecologic cancers. Trainees will be presenting on topics like prevention, survivorship, quality of life, diagnostics, and treatment of gynecologic cancers in the form of oral and rapid-fire presentation styles. The event will also have opportunities for professional development for all attendees through our patient engagement panel, career panel, and keynote speakers. The GCI is also thrilled to feature Dr. Yvette Drew and Dr. Ian Graham as keynote speakers to inspire and empower the research community. Trainees, researchers, physicians, and patient partners are all welcome to attend this hybrid event!

Student Learning Commons - Workshops

The Student Learning Commons offers a suite of workshops under the following categories; Learning, Writing, and English as an Additional Language (EAL). Workshops range from 60 to 90 minutes and provide valuable information in engaging formats. Each semester we present a slightly different collection of workshops. You can also search by date in our workshops calendar.

'Re-Charge Your Academic Success', being held June 7, 8, and 9, 2022  This three-part workshop series is open to all undergraduate students but will be of particular interest for students looking to recharge to face the challenges of university studies.    

Most Student Learning Commons workshops, including workshop recordings viewed online, are eligible for inclusion on your Co-Curricular Record. To receive Co-Curricular credits, fill out the CCR Reflection Form.

Note: Students cannot receive Co-Curricular (CCR) credits for a workshop if the workshop is already being used to receive academic credit in a course.

Research participant recruitment

The effect of passive cycling on cardiac function and spasticity

Will a machine pedaling your legs help your heart?

We are conducting a research study to find the answer. We are looking for men and women aged 19-50 years with and without Spinal Cord Injury to take part in a study examining the effects of passive and active cycling on the heart.

You can help improve the treatment of spinal cord injuries, strokes, and other neurologic illness.

Your participation in this study will involve tests of your heart function, and will take about 1.5 hours. This will be done while you sit in a wheelchair and have your feet pedaled by a bicycle-like machine.

Athletic Therapist

Under the direction of the Physiotherapy Manager, the Athletic Therapist is active in the prevention, assessment, and treatment of athletic injuries in the Physiotherapy Clinic and in the varsity sports environment. The incumbent of this position assists in the prevention, assessment and treatment of injuries for athletes in 17 NCAA Division II sports; provides medical support for SFU varsity athletic teams at home and away; provides medical support for visiting teams; participates in providing medical support for other SFU athletic events as necessary; assists in ensuring compliance between clinic policies and NCAA guidelines; participates in the oversight of the student trainer program; assists with summer camps and high school programs; and coordinates high school co-op placements.

The Athletic Therapist follows protocol to screen and test for serious injuries, such as concussions, and makes decisions regarding an athlete's treatment and readiness to safely return to activity. The incumbent of this position is also responsible for coordinating pre-season medical testing and ensuring incoming and returning athletes are appropriately covered for medical insurance.

Respite Caregiver ad from Developmental Disabilities Association

Are you available to work a few hours/week with a child, and have some experience or training with intellectual disabilities? If so, we’d love to hear from you!

The Developmental Disabilities Association is seeking contracted Respite Caregivers for 1:1 support for children with intellectual disabilities (e.g. autism) to access their community. Sessions are 3-5 hours long and are on weekends or after school.   

Requirements: valid First Aid with CPR, clear criminal record, references, some training or work/volunteer experience in a field related to developmental disabilities.

Wages are $16/hour or $18/hr for individuals with higher support needs.

Behaviour Interventionist Opportunity

Stepping Stones Consultants is an agency seeking individuals interested in working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other disorders (ADHD/ADD, ODD, GAD, etc.) in the role of a Behaviour Interventionist (BI). The successful candidate will implement a home-based therapy program under the guidance of a Board-Certified Behaviour Consultant (BC). Therapy includes working 1:1 sessions targeting play, academic, social, communication, self-management, and self-care skills.

This position is perfect for those with a background in/goals towards a career in speech-language pathology, education, psychology, social services, rehabilitation sciences, occupational therapy, and the like.

Compensation:
$15 per hour, increasing to $20 per hour after the first 3-month probationary period, with opportunities for raises every 6 months thereafter.  

Qualifications:
- Energetic, punctual, patient, and interested in supporting growth in children
- At least 19 years of age
- Have strong communication and play skills
- Able to commit to the position for at least 6 months
- Having your own vehicle is an asset

The Association of Canadian Ergonomists - BC/Yukon Region is recruiting a new Student Representative. This volunteer position runs from January 2023 - December 2024. The council host meetings once a month via Zoom along with year-round in-person/online events.
