After 40 years writing and researching about China, Willy Lam is a recognized expert in areas including the Chinese Communist Party, elite politics and ideology, foreign policy, the People’s Liberation Army, as well as the country’s economic and political reform.

He has published several books, including The Fight for China’s Future (2020), Routledge Handbook of the Chinese Communist Party (2017) and Chinese Politics in the Era of Xi Jinping (2015).

He is a senior fellow at The Jamestown Foundation, a foreign-policy think tank in Washington, DC; and an associate at the Centre for Asia-Pacific Initiatives at the University of Victoria. Previously, he taught Chinese politics and international relations at universities in Hong Kong and Japan. Earlier in his career, he worked in senior editorial positions in international media, including Asiaweek, South China Morning Post and CNN.

He has a BA and MA in Buddhist studies, an MA in China studies and a PhD in political economy.
