Beth Milliard

Instructor
First Responders Trauma Prevention and Recovery

Instructor Beth Milliard knows first-hand the life of a first responder. A front-line patrol sergeant with the York Regional Police and former supervisor of its peer support unit, she is also married to a police officer. We’re fortunate to have Beth bring her lived experience to the First Responders Trauma Prevention and Recovery program, where she leads the Peer Support and Code of Ethics course.

How do you bring your own personal and/or professional experience into the online classroom?

In addition to being a police officer for almost 20 years, I am a spouse of a police officer and grew up with a father who was a police officer. I understand the importance of wellness in the profession. I also completed my MA and PhD on subjects relating to mental health and police officers.

Why is it so important for first responders to learn about peer support?

The stigma regarding mental health is still prevalent. However, having a robust peer support program in any organization helps to break down the stigma and encourages people to get the help they need sooner rather than later. Peer support is more than just a conversation.

Who can this course benefit the most?

This course is beneficial for anyone who wants to know about peer support, or who is thinking about creating a peer support program in their organization.

What has been the response from students to your course?

Students have enjoyed learning about the many aspects of peer support and appreciate the discussion boards and learning from others.

What do you most hope students will take away from your course?

My goal is for students to take away something that they can bring back to their organization or have in their toolkit when peer-supporting others.

What do you find most rewarding about teaching in this program?

I love teaching in this program because it is nice to teach students who are so passionate about helping others and are open to sharing their own personal and professional experiences.
