Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies: Visiting Fellowship and Visiting Research Fellowships: the Abdul Aziz Al-Mutawa and Muhammad Bin-Ladin Visiting Fellowships 

Amount:

  • an annual stipend of £5,000 GBP (9,224 CAD, conversion rate on (9th Nov, 2025)
  • Working space provided
  • Membership of the Common Room including dining facilities
  • Assistance with finding residential accommodation

Deadline: Open in August and close in January 9th annually

Duration: 1 year (shorter period is available without stipend)

General: Research relevant to the study of Islam or the Muslim world

  • Current research at the Centre is concentrated within four broad areas, but we welcome fellowship applications from scholars conducting research on a diverse range of topics:
  • The grant is intended as a supplementary award and may be held in conjunction with other research grants, stipends, or sabbatical salaries:
    • Muslim Societies Past and Present
    • Identity and Citizenship: Muslims in Britain and the West
    • Classical Islamic Sciences
    • Economic and Human Development and Islamic Finance
    • Science, Technology, Environment and Muslim Societies

Eligibility:

  • Applicants will normally be established academics but scholars at the postdoctoral or equivalent level are also eligible.
  • An academic affiliation is not a necessary requirement.
  • The criteria for selection of Visiting Fellows are:
    • evidence of academic excellence including quality of publications
    • relevance of the proposed research to the overall aims and current academic research priorities of the Centre
    • potential to contribute to and benefit from interdisciplinary interaction with other Centre Fellows and/or Visiting Fellows

Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies: Visiting Fellowship and Visiting Research Fellowships: the Imam Bukhari and the Imam Tirmizi Visiting Research Fellowship

Amount:

  • a research allowance of £4,000 GBP with waiver of any hosting fee (7,379.20 CAD, conversion rate on 9th Nov 2025)
  • Working space provided
  • Membership of the Common Room including dining facilities
  • Assistance with finding residential accommodation.

Deadline: Open in August and close in January 16th annually

Duration: 1 year (shorter period is available without stipend)

Requirements:

Citizenship: Citizens of countries found in Asia and Africa are particularly encouraged to apply for this scheme.

General:

  • Applicants should normally be at the postdoctoral or equivalent level.
  • Preference will be given to those studying classical Islamic sciences, although other areas in the humanities and social sciences will be considered.
  • The grant is intended as a supplementary award and may be held in conjunction with other research grants, stipends, or sabbatical salaries.

Eligibility:

Citizenship: These Visiting Research Fellowships are open to citizens of countries in Asia or Africa, and are intended to encourage interaction among academics from different traditions of learning.

  • The criteria for selection of Visiting Fellows are:
    • Evidence of academic excellence including quality of publications
    • Relevance of the proposed research to the overall aims and current academic research priorities of the Centre
    • Potential to contribute to and benefit from interdisciplinary interaction with other Centre Fellows and/or Visiting Fellows

ACLS: The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation: Buddhism Public Scholars Fellowship

Amount:

  • up to 75,000 USD and health insurance at US-based host institutions
  • up to 57,000 GBP at the Courtauld Institute of Art, UK
  • up to 84,000 CAD at Lion’s Roar, Canada
  • Above compensation consists two parts: payroll (subject to payroll taxes and deductions) and allowance (relocation, research/travel/home office expenses, and professional development)

Deadline: Close at January 27, annually

Duration: 12 – 24 months beginning in September

Requirements:

Citizenship: open

General:

  • An applicant must hold a PhD in the humanities or social sciences and conferred within the past 8 years.
  • Your work/research presents and interprets knowledge of Buddhist traditions.
  • Each applicant may apply for up to two of the available positions, indicating which is the first preference.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must hold a PhD in the humanities or social sciences from an accredited university.
  • An applicant must hold a PhD conferred within the past 8 years.
  • If the PhD is not conferred (officially awarded) before the application deadline, finalists will be asked to submit a letter from the scholar’s graduate school confirming that the dissertation has been submitted and approved by the graduate school for conferral according to the university calendar. The scholar is responsible for submitting the dissertation on time in order to meet this requirement.
  • Applicants must have work authorization (e.g., citizenship or permanent residency) in the country in which the host institution is located. If you are uncertain of your status or would require assistance with a visa, please contact BuddhistStudies@acls.org to confirm your eligibility. Neither ACLS nor the host institution will sponsor scholars for visas. See FAQ for further information on work authorization.
  • Applicants to US-based host institutions must be authorized to work legally in the United States for the duration of the initial 12-month fellowship term. This includes Indigenous individuals residing in the United States through rights associated with the Jay Treaty of 1794, and those who hold DACA status, Temporary Protected Status, political asylee or refugee status, and other non-permanent status.
  • Applicants to the Courtauld Institute of Art (UK) must have the right to work in the United Kingdom.
  • Applicants to Lion’s Roar (Canada) must be authorized to work legally in Canada for the duration of the initial 12-month fellowship term.
