Sumitomo Foundation – Grant for Japan-related Research Projects 

Amount: 

  • The grant budget is 50 million JPY (463,697.26 CAD on 29th Oct 2023) in total, with 70 projects to be selected.

Application details:

Deadline: September 1 to October 31, annually

Duration: 1 year. Can extend to 2 years if required, subject to the approval of foundation.

Requirements:

Citizenship: citizens of Southeast or East Asian (non Japanese) nationality

General: work in social sciences or humanities that is related to Japan

Eligibility:

  • Eligible Projects are any research project to be carried out by individual or a group in the field of the social sciences or humanities that is related to Japan.
  • Researcher shall be of Asian (non Japanese) nationality, living outside Japan.
  • Awarded researcher must conduct the proposed research by himself or herself.
  • Language of application is English or Japanese.
  • Project can be individual or collaborartive.
  • Applicant will need to submit application form and letter of recommendation.

Details:

  • The program aims at enhancing mutual understanding between Asian countries and Japan through promoting research projects in the field of the social sciences or humanities that are related to Japan.
  • The grant period is one year, but can be extended by another one year maximum upon request.

Japan Foundation – Grant Program for Japanese Studies Projects 

Amount:

  • The exact amount is unspecified but will cover the following :
  1. Travel costs
  2. Daily allowances and accommodation fees
  3. Honoraria for lecturers, collaborators interpreters, etc.
  4. Other expenses (for venues, equipment, materials, public relations, etc.)

Deadline: December of each year (U.S. applicants: November of each year).

Eligibility:

  • Applicants need to be an institution : Not-for-profit organizations (e.g., academic institutions from university level upwards, research institutions, or academic societies), except those in Japan and the United States of America, are eligible to apply. Applicants must meet the following requirements (individuals are not eligible to apply):
  1. Applicants must have the capacity needed to implement the planned project(s).
  2. The receipt of grants or support from the Japan Foundation must not violate any local laws, regulations, or ordinances.
  • The Japan Foundation does not provide grants for:
  1. Foreign governments (including their administrative organs, embassies, and consulates- general, but excluding educational, cultural, or research institutes, such as universities or museums);
  2. International organizations to which Japanese national government organs contribute;
  3. Organizations based in countries that do not have diplomatic relations with Japan;
  4. Japanese national government organs, local governments, incorporated administrative agencies, and local incorporated administrative agencies, as well as education and research institutions and other organizations, institutions, and facilities attached to or established by these (excluding organizations with their own legal personalities, such as incorporated associations or incorporated foundations).
  • Eligible projects include
  1. Research or conferences on Japan; study or training in Japan or publications that promote and contribute to the development of Japanese studies;
  2. Inviting scholars or researchers from Japan or another country to deliver lectures on Japanese studies;
  3. Obtaining books and materials on Japanese studies;
  4. Other relevant projects which will further promote and expand the horizon of Japanese studies and interest in Japan.
  • When requesting funds for multiple projects (e.g., for a conference and for library support), applicants are required to complete all mandatory application sections for each project and submit two or more applications separately.
  • It must be impossible or difficult for the applicants to achieve the purpose of the project without funding from the Japan Foundation
  • The plan and implementation method must be appropriate and there must be sufficient expectation that the project will yield positive results.
  • Organizations in Taiwan considering application should contact the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association (JTEA), Taipei Office, with which the Japan Foundation cooperates.

Details:

  • The objective of the fellowship is to promote Japenese studies overseas. This program partially covers the cost of Japenese studies projects run by overseas not-for-profit organisations.
  • Projects will be selected by comprehensively considering applications, including their contents, viability, relevance, efficiency, etc. The Japan Foundation also takes into account the regional and national distribution of its funding, and may select projects accordingly, if need be.
  • A proposed project shall not be awarded multiple Japan Foundation grants.

The Toyota Foundation – International Grant Program

Amount:

  • One-year project: 5,000,000 JPY (46,029.34 CAD, conversion rate of 29th October 2023).
  • Two-year project: 10,000,000 JPY (92,058 CAD, conversion rate of 29th October 2023).

Program Title: Cultivating Empathy Through Learning from Our Neighbors: Practitioners' Exchange on Common Issues in Asia

General: Applicants should be a diverse team based in multiple target countries in East Asia

Eligibility:

  • The project representative must have a contact address in Japan.
  • Applicants should be a diverse team based in multiple target countries in East Asia (non-target countries can be included in the project but only in addition to 2+ target countries).
  • Team members could include those with practical experience and knowledge on addressing issues in the target countries, such as practitioners, researchers, creators, policymakers, journalists, and other media representatives.
  •  The representative and members must be individuals who have practical experience in the target countries, such as conducting research, carrying out activities, producing creative works, and making policy proposals in regard to the focused issues.
  • The representative and members must be capable of carrying out a project with a diverse network of participants across multiple target countries.
  • Applicants can consult with the program officers of the Toyota Foundation in advance of applying via email. 

Details:

  • The grant program focuses on deepening mutual understanding and knowledge-sharing among people on the ground in East, South and Southeast Asia who are finding solutions to shared issues.
  • The project may have multinational teams consisting of participants from diverse backgrounds. Projects can form cooperative and creative alliances that consider, act on, and construct solutions to shared issues, avoiding conventional linear relationships, such as “supporter and supported” or “instructor and trainee”.
  • The grant program aims to survey and analyze situations in target countries (which include countries in East Asia, Southeast Asia and South Asia, East Asia: Japan, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, South Korea and Mongolia. Southeast Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam. South Asia: Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) to obtain new perspectives, and expand the potential of future generations.
  • Proposals are expected to include the Four Keywords indicated below.
  1. Transnational: Set issues that are common to at least two countries/regions from the target countries/regions, with members who are active in each country/region to participate on an equal basis.
  2. Cross Sector: The team members comprising multiple sectors such as academia, government, social, non-profit, etc., conduct practical activities that contribute to problem-solving, in addition to researching and analyzing existing initiatives.
  3. Mutual Learning: Activities incorporate interaction among people on site (local supporters, concerned parties, local residents, etc.) To achieve mutual learning.
  4. Foresight: Gain insights into important issues that society is likely to face in the future and acquire new perspectives that will lead to future development through active learning with diverse stakeholders beyond the conventional framework.
  • For reference, 9 projects were approved out of 98 applications in 2022.
  • Expected Activities and Outputs include the following:

 Engage in practical activities for solving the issues through mutual learning, by exchange between members from two or more countries and sectors.

 Produce deliverables, such as policy recommendations, videos, websites, teaching materials, exhibitions, and disseminate them to society.
