American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) – Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowships

Amount:

  • 30,000 USD, plus funds for research costs of up to 3,000 USD and for university fees of up to 5,000 USD

Requirements:

  • Citizenship: Open
  • General: must be a PhD candidate in a humanities or social science department in the United States

Eligibility:

  • Must be PhD candidates in a humanities or social science department in the United States.
  • Must have completed all requirements for the PhD except the dissertation (i.e., obtained ABD status) by the application deadline.
  • Must be no more than six years into the degree program at the time of application. This includes time spent earning an MA within that program.
  • Must not currently hold or have previously held a dissertation completion fellowship.
  • Must have not previously applied for this fellowship more than once.

Details:

  • These fellowships support a year of research and writing to help advanced graduate students in the humanities and related social sciences in the last year of PhD dissertation writing.
  • The tenure is one year beginning in the following summer.
  • Applicants must be prepared to complete their dissertations within the period of their fellowship tenure and no later than August 31.
  • The fellowship may be carried out in residence at the fellow's home institution, abroad, or at another appropriate site for the research. These fellowships may not be held concurrently with any other fellowship or grant.

American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) – Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Dissertation Fellowships in Buddhist Studies

Amount: 

  • 30,000 USD

Deadline: November 15, annually

Requirements:

  • Citizenship: Open
  • General: must be a PhD student in an accredited, degree-granting university

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be a PhD student in an accredited, degree-granting university.
  • Applicants must complete by April 15 of all requirements for the PhD degree except research and writing of the dissertation.
  • There are no restrictions as to the location of work proposed or the citizenship/residence of applicants.

Details:

  • The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Dissertation Fellowships in Buddhist Studies provide one-year stipends to PhD candidates for full time preparation of dissertations.  The fellowship period may be used for fieldwork, archival research, analysis of findings, or for writing after research is complete. 
  • No other employment is permitted during the fellowship period.

The D. Kim Foundation –Dissertation Fellowship

Amount:

  • Up to 25,000 USD

Deadline:

December 1, annually

Requirements:

Citizenship: Open

General: must be a Ph.D. candidate who are writing their dissertations

Eligibility:

  • No requirement of nationality, origins, or gender.
  • Applicants should include two draft chapters with their application.

Details:

The grants are awarded annually to Ph.D. candidates who are writing their dissertations. Research topics should be related to the history of science and technology in modern East Asia. Comparative studies of East Asia and the West as well as studies in related fields (mathematics, medicine and public health) are also welcome.

The Graham Foundation – Carter Manny Award (Writing Award)

Amount:

  • Up to 20,000 USD

Deadline: November 15, annually

Requirements:

  • Citizenship: Open
  • General: must officially enrolled in schools in the US and Canada; must be nominated by students’ department

Eligibility:

  • PhD students who are presently candidates for a doctoral degree are eligible to apply.
  • Students must be nominated by their department to apply for the Carter Manny Award.
  • At the time of application, students must have completed all requirements for the PhD except the dissertation and have had their dissertation proposals formally approved by their academic departments.
  • The award is open to students officially enrolled in schools in the US and Canada, regardless of citizenship.

Details:

  • The writing award encourages timely completion of the PhD by assisting students whose projects have architecture as their primary focus and the potential to shape architectural discourse and who are in the advanced stages of the dissertation with one year of writing.
  • The award assists students enrolled in graduate programs in architecture, art history, the fine arts, humanities, and the social sciences working on architecture topics.
  • Applicants for a writing award will be asked to submit a writing sample from the dissertation, a dissertation table of contents, and a writing schedule.

The Academy of Korean Studies –  Pre-doctoral  Fellowship

Amount:

  • A stipend of 1,500,000 KRW (1,750 CAD) per month (21,000 CAD/year)
  • Round trip airfare

Deadline: October 15, annually

Requirements:

  • Citizenship: Non-Korean
  • General: must be currently engaged in Korea-related teaching and research activities in the humanities and social sciences

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be foreign scholars (including those who have Korean nationality with permanent residence status in foreign countries) in the humanities and social sciences, who are currently engaged in Korea-related teaching and research activities.
  • Applicants must be doctoral candidates who have completed all academic requirements except for their dissertation (i.e., ABD) from institutions outside Korea.

Details:

  • The Academy of Korean Studies runs the “AKS Fellowship Program for Korean Studies” in order to provide international scholars and doctoral candidates with an opportunity to carry out their research(dissertation research).
  • The fellowship period should begin within year 2018 (January 1 and December 31, 2018). The applicants can apply for minimum one month to maximum one year support.
  • Fellows are expected to submit their research paper and present research results at AKS Colloquium before the termination of their research period.

Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange – Doctoral Fellowships

Amount:

  • Up to 18,000 USD

Deadline: August 1 to October 15, annually

Requirements:

  • Citizenship: Non-Taiwanese
  • General: must be currently enrolled in an accredited university in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, or South America

Eligibility:

  • Doctoral candidates who are non-ROC citizens and who are enrolled in an accredited university in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, or South America may apply for financial support for writing dissertations in the field of Chinese Studies in the humanities and social sciences.
  • Grants are available only to doctoral candidates who are neither employed nor receiving grants from other sources during the grant period.
  • Applicants should have completed all other requirements for their Ph.D. degree, and must be in the last stage of their doctoral program.

Details:

  • The fellowship is given for a period extending to one year. Successful candidates are expected to complete their dissertations by the end of the grant period.
  • The completed thesis should be submitted to the Foundation when the project is finished.
  • Applicants must ask their dissertation adviser to include a paragraph in her/his letter of recommendation stating the likelihood that the applicant can successfully complete the dissertation during the grant period.

Society of Woman Geographers – Pruitt Dissertation Fellowships

Amount:

  • Up to 12,000 USD

Deadline: February 1, annually

Requirements:

  • Citizenship: Open
  • General: must be a female student in PhD programs in geography or in geographical aspects of allied fields and be enrolled in PhD programs in the US or Canada

Eligibility:

  • Eligible applicants are female students in PhD programs in geography or in geographical aspects of allied fields.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in PhD programs in the US or Canada.
  • Preference will be given to those who have completed comprehensive examinations and have an approved dissertation research proposal by the fall of the year for which they are applying.

Details:

  • Pruitt Dissertation Fellowships support dissertation research in geography and geographical aspects of related fields.
  • Eligible expenses include those for travel and other research-related expenses including data gathering, data analysis, and writing. Living expenses (room and board, food and rent) for the period of the research whether field, university, or home-based are acceptable.

China Times Cultural Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Research in Chinese Studies

Amount:

  • 6,000 to 10,000 USD

Deadline: June 30, annually

Requirements:

  • Citizenship: Open
  • General: must be enrolled in the humanities or social sciences at a US or Canadian university

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be enrolled in the humanities or social sciences at a US or Canadian university.
  • Applicants must have approved dissertation proposals.
  • No citizenship requirement.
  • Must be studying ethnic studies and humanities.

Details:

  • Scholarship is in support of doctoral dissertation-writing and research in Chinese Studies.
  • Scholarships are in the amount of 6,000 USD each.
  • A special award of 10,000 USD will be given to the top winner.
