How to Apply

Important Announcement

The MATE program is not taking applications in 2023. We hope to begin a new cohort for 2023–2025. We regret the disappointment this announcement may cause to prospective students.

Applications are accepted online through the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies online application system. In order to use the online application system, you will need to pay an application fee of $90 CAD (domestic students with Canadian credentials only) by credit card (MasterCard or Visa). If you cannot apply online please contact the department graduate program assistant.

Online application packages must include the following materials:

  • SFU graduate application form
  • Three (3) letters of reference. Letters must be in sealed, signed envelopes if mailed directly to the Department. These letters can come from former professors if the applicant is a relatively recent graduate, but also from principals, department heads and colleagues. Letters of reference should assess the applicant's ability to do well in and complete an MA in English. Referees may comment upon the applicant's aptitude for advanced English studies, his or her enthusiasm for literature, intelligence, verbal skills, maturity, and work habits. They may want to speak to the applicant's initiative in taking up leadership roles in the study of English in his or her schools and professional development activities.
  • Transcripts of all previous post-secondary studies. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required to be considered for admission to MATE. Transcripts must be in sealed envelopes which bear a university seal if mailed directly to the Department. One copy only of each transcript is required.
  • Applicants must submit a concise statement (1-2 pages) about their intended course of studies, their aptitudes, and their interests in graduate work in English.

Application packages MUST BE COMPLETE by the deadline. Incomplete application packages will NOT be reviewed.
