Dr. Brian Corrie, the IRMACS Technical Director, will participate in SC12, the International Conference for High Performance Computing, Network, Storage and Analysis, that will be held in Salt Lake City between November 10-16, 2012.

The IRMACS Centre will host "The Riemann Zeta Function Workshop" on November 2nd and 3rd. The workshop will bring together some of the world leading researchers in the field, including Professor Richard E. Crandall, Vollum Adjunct Professor of Science and Director, Center for Advanced Computation, Reed College, and Professor Sir Michael Berry, Melville Wills Professor of Physics (Emeritus), University of Bristol, England. Welcome everyone!

Dr. Faisal Beg, an Associate Professor in the SFU School of Engineering and a long term IRMACS project leader, was recently awarded the 2012 Meritorious Achievement Award by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC. Congratulations, Dr. Beg!

For this year's iteration of Math Catcher's "Aboriginal Students in Math and Science" workshop, scheduled for October 23, the IRMACS Centre will host a group of about 70 Aboriginal high school students for a day of hands-on mathematics.

October 16, 2012

On Tuesday, October 16th, the IRMACS Centre will host a delegation from the Government of Chile led by Mr. Roberto Ibarra, Ambassador of Chile to Canada. The IRMACS Centre will have the opportunity to tour the delegation around and highlight 'real life' examples of work IRMACS researcher's have been doing over the past few years.

A sincere welcome to Ms. Zena Bruneau who joined the IRMACS team a couple of weeks ago. Zena is our new Front Desk / Research Assistant and will provide administrative and logostical support for the Centre. Please stop by the front desk to meet Zena if you haven't seen her smiling face already!

On Thursday, October 4, 2012, the IRMACS Centre will host Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, an Indian scientist and administrator who served as the 11th President of India. Dr. Kalem's presentation titled “India’s high-tech transformation” is scheduled to start at 4:45 and is organized by the Burnaby Mountain College.

The IRMACS Centre is pleased to announce that Mr. Gregory Kelly is this year's recipient of the Peter Borwein Annual Graduate Scholarship in Mathematical and Computational Modelling of Complex Systems Award. Mr. Kelly, who completed his M. Sc. in Resource and Environmental Management, has just started his Ph.D. studies under Special Arrangement in Science.

The Fall 2012 IMC Colloquium session highlites researchers who participated in the creation of the IRMACS CFI proposal "PRISM: Practical Research and Innovation through complex Systems Modelling". The first speaker in the line up that includes some of the SFU leading researchers will be Dr. Nicholas K. Dulvy, Canadian Research Chair in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation, on October 5th.
