Between May 29 - June 1, 2015, Dr. Felix Breden, Executive Director of the IRMACS Centre, and Dr. Jamie Scott, an IRMACS project leader, together with Dr. Tom Kepler form Boston University are organizing workshops to self-organize the community using and producing “Big Data” immune receptor datasets. The purpose of the meetings is to address the challenges involved in managing and analyzing these large datasets. For more information click here.

May 26, 2015

On Monday, May 25, 2015, the IRMACS Centre will host the Data Presentation Workshop. The workshop is presented by WestGrid and the Vancouver Institute for Visual Analytics. This one-day, hands-on workshop will introduce participants to ParaView, an open source, multi-platform data analysis and visualization application. For more information click here.

May 15, 2015

On Wednesday, May 20, 2015, the IRMACS Centre will host SFU’s inaugural Postdoctoral Research Day: An Exhibition of Excellence. This full-day conference will feature oral and poster presentations from current SFU Postdoctoral Fellows, as well as two keynote career-related talks. The event is being organized by SFU’s Postdoctoral Fellows Association and co-sponsored by the Dean of the Office of Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Fellows and the Vice-President, Research. Congratulations to Dr. Paul Tupper, an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics and an IRMACS Project Leader, whose Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Applied Mathematics was recently being renewed. Dr. Tupper's research interests include stochastic differential equations, diversities, and cognitive science.

On Saturday, May 2, 2015, The IRMACS Centre will host the BC Association of Kinesiologists (BCAK) Professional Development Sessions in conjunction with the BCAK's Annual General Meeting. The BCAK promotes kinesiology in BC as a valuable health care service. It supports the advancement of the profession and provides resources to its members to assist them in their practice. Between April 20-24, 2015, the IRMACS Centre will host the Statistical Inference for Large Scale Data workshop. The workshop will explore, delineate, and make progress on open theoretical issues in the statistical aspects of Large Scale Inference. For more information see here. Welcome everyone!

To celebrate 10 years of successful research collaborations, IRMACS will host a series of special events on April 9 and 10, including workshops, presentations and a roundtable discussion on research innovation. To honour the vision of Dr. Peter Borwein and all that he has done for the IRMACS Centre, for SFU, and through his scientific impact on society, the IRMACS Centre has established the Peter Borwein Graduate Scholarship Endowment Fund. This year's IRMACS Centre's Pi Day celebration will take place on Pi Day Eve, Friday, March 13th, starting at 11:30 am. Dr. Len Berggren, one of the most prominent Canadian math historians, will give a presentation titled "From Solomon to Samarkand, Karnak to Kashi: Pi in the Ancient and Medieval Worlds". Dr. Berggren is one of the co-authors of "Pi: A Source Book", the book that documents the history of pi from the dawn of mathematical time to the present. 

Everybody will get to enjoy a piece of pie at the end!

The IRMACS Centre welcomes Dr. Ben Adcock from the Department of Mathematics as its newest project leader. We congratulate Dr. Adcock on his recent Sloan Research Fellowship and look forward to collaborating with Ben and his project members.
