Dr. Brian Corrie, the IRMACS Centre's Technical Director, will represent the iReceptor project at the CANARIE Research Software Developers' Workshop that will be held between October 20-21, 2014, in Toronto, ON.

The IRMACS Centre will continue this fall with our series of events entitled "SFU Research Masterclass." The format of each event is a sit down session with an interviewer, rather than a standard presentation format. This is followed by a Q&A with the audience.  We invite SFU graduate students and postdocs, as well as SFU researchers across the disciplines, SFU research personnel, and researcher grant facilitators to attend the "SFU Research Masterclass" sessions. On Thursday, Oct 9, 2014, the interviewee will be Dr. Peter Ruben, Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology. On September 29, 2014, Dr. Andrew Sixsmith, Director of SFU’s Gerontology Research Centre and a Deputy Director of the IRMACS Centre was cited in the article "Over 65 and going strong: Baby boomers are reinventing old age" in The Province saying that, "There is a big group of people who have never lived in their own house, don’t have big pensions and have not saved. Between September 12-15 the IRMACS Centre hosted the "Antibody & T-Cell Receptor Data Integration Planning Meeting". This planning meeting was an international gathering of stakeholders in the area of Immunogenetics, with the goal of setting the topics and organizing a large Community Meeting for May 29th - June 1st, 2015.

The 2014 Annual IRMACS Project Leader Meeting is scheduled for September 9th. This meeting will be an opportunity to update the IRMACS members on the recent developments, to introduce new projects, and to discuss future directions and projects within the Centre. See you there!

Dr. Felix Breden, the Executive Director of the IRMACS Centre, has completed his sabbatical as a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin Institute for Advanced Studies in Berlin Germany.  Welcome back, Felix!

The IRMACS Centre's produced animated file "Small Number and the Old Canoe" in the Halq'eméylem language is the featured video on the Endangered Languages Project website. Messrs. Nishanth Marthandan, Bojan Zimonja, and Jerome Jaglale have joined the IRMACS Centre staff as members of the ongoing CANARIE funded iReceptor Project. The iReceptor project will build the world’s first platform to integrate immune receptor gene sequences across.  Welcome to the IRMACS team Nishanth, Bojan, and Jerome!

Between July 2-July 31, the IRMACS Centre will host the first SFU Academic Summer Camp for Aboriginal Students. The main goal of the camp is to help Aboriginal students currently in grades 8-11 to accelerate in Mathematics and English.  In addition, this camp will offer the participants an opportunity to be exposed to the life of a university student. Please welcome our guests when you meet them in the Centre and show them your support in their pursuit of their educational goals.
