On February 12th, 2015, the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) selected 10 Canadian post-secondary educators as the 2015 3M National Teaching Fellows. One of them was Dr. Veselin Jungic, a Deputy Director of the IRMACS Centre. Congratulations, Veso!

An endowment fund has been sat up for the Peter Borwein Annual Graduate Scholarship in Mathematical and Computational Modelling of Complex Systems.  The award was established in April 2010 by the IRMACS Centre at SFU to recognize the scientific contribution to the field of the Mathematical and Computational Modelling of the IRMACS Centre’s founder Dr. Peter Borwein. The SFU IRMACS Centre is pleased to share today’s 36.6M NCE funding announcement for the AGE-WELL Network.  AGE-WELL is a new national hub for research and innovation to help seniors live independently & safely at home.  IRMACS is a named core facility in the network and will provide technical infrastructure and research management to AGE-WELL researchers.

Dr. Yuri Gusev, a long term IRMACS members, recently published a paper titled "On the integral law of thermal radiation". The paper summarizes Dr. Gusev's research that he conducted during his stays at Lebedev Research Center in Physics, Moscow, Russia, Max Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert Einstein Institute), Golm, Germany, Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques, Bures-sur-Yvette, France, Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics. Kyoto, Japan, and the IRMACS Centre.

December 19, 2014

On December 15, 2014, the Honourable Ed Holder, Minister of State (Science and Technology), made the announcement that the AGE-WELL Network is one of five research networks that has been named to conduct groundbreaking research that focuses on addressing various major health and life sciences issues. In the words of Dr. Andrew Sixsmith, one of the Deputy Director's of the IRMACS Centre and a Scientific Director, for the AGE-WELL Network, "We will identify the needs of aging people and develop solutions to help them live more independently and safely at home while reducing the burden on their caregivers".  Congratulations to everyone involved!

The IRMACS Centre is pleased to announce that our newly renovated meeting room ASB 10940 is fully functional. Through the SFU University Priority Fund and in collaboration with the Virtual Campus Infrastructure Project team we have done a full state of the art technical upgrade including a new 4K or Ultra High Definition (3840x2160 pixel resolution) 84in touch screen. The system is designed as a data-intensive meeting room, allowing for the visualization of high resolution data sets and direct data interaction through the touch enabled screen.

Several current and former IRMACS members including D. Bingham, W. Challenger, and J. Graham, contributed to the book "Statistics in Action: A Canadian Outlook" published earlier this year by Chapman & Hall/CRC. The book's objective is to present to a general readership some of the ways in which statistics is used, while highlighting important contributions that Canadian statisticians are making to science, technology, business, and government, among others. The book's content is avaliable here.

Dr. Veselin Jungic, a Deputy Director of the IRMACS Centre, was recently awarded an NSERC ENGAGE Grant to work together with the company Arcana Inc. on a development of a new math app. The project will be hosted by the IRMACS Centre.  Congratulations Veso!

All of us at the IRMACS Centre wish to congratulate Dr. Lesley Shannon, a long time supporter of the IRMACS Centre, on her Teaching Award of Excellence in Engineering Education. In the words of the President of the The Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia, "An inspirational teacher and role model, Shannon has been an exceptional mentor for students, playing a significant role in recruiting and retaining female students."

The 5th Annual Aboriginal Students in Math and Science workshop is scheduled for October 29, 2014. The IRMACS Centre will host a group of about 80 Aboriginal high school students and their teachers for a day of hands-on mathematics and science. This event will also be a reunion for some of the participants of the 2014 SFU Academic Camp for Aboriginal Students. The list of speakers and schedule of the event are available here.
