CANARIE, a vital component of Canada’s digital infrastructure supporting research, education and innovation, recently announced a further $2.4M in investment in eight new Software Platforms and Services. One of these new platforms is iReceptor; led by Dr. Felix Breden, the Executive Director of the IRMACS Centre. More information is available here.

The IRMACS Centre is pleased to announce that they will be showing live games of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. For the daily schedule please check the board in the IRMACS atrium. We ask that you bring donations for the SFU Food Bank as your admission contribution. The box will be in the front of the Studio before each game. On Wednesday, May 28, the IRMACS Centre hosted the Deans Council meeting. The first item on their agenda was a tour/show & tell around the IRMACS Centre. We would like to thank the IRMACS members/project leaders who were in their labs during the tour and who showcased their current research projects for the SFU Deans and VPA.

On Thursday, May 22, The IRMACS Centre hosted the SFU Technical Research Support Summit. The list of attendees included Dr. Mario Pinto, Vice President Research, Mr. Jay Black, Chief Information Officer, Dr. Felix Breden, Executive Director, The IRMACS Centre, and Dr. Dugan O'Neil, Chief Science Officer, Compute Canada. The group discussed the challenges and opportunities of the current and future technical research support at SFU.

During the first week of May the IRMACS Centre's Executive Team, Dr. Felix Breden, Ms. Pam Borghardt, and Dr. Brian Corrie, visited the CNRS (Centre national de la resecherche scientifique) at the Université Montpellier, France.  Members of their IMGT (international ImMunoGeneTics) team met to discuss strategic directions for the IRMACS-CANARIE iReceptor project.

On Wednesday, May 7, 2014, between 10:30-16:00, the IRMACS Centre will host the Optimization Networking Event. This event will be of interest to researchers and industries active in various fields including health management, energy management, resource allocation, scheduling, and decision making. April 29, 2014

Dr. Zabrina Brumme, an IRMACS project leader, was the lead author of a study that traced the evolution of HIV in North America, finding evidence that the virus is slowly adapting over time to its human hosts.The study was recently published in the journal PLOS Genetics. All of us from the IRMACS Centre congratulate Phillipe Gabianelli, a previous recipient of the Peter Borwein Graduate Scholarship, on his recent and very successful Ph.D. defense. Phillipe's contribution to the IRMACS Centre community through his involvement in the MoCCSy Program has been invaluable. Well done, Phillipe!

Dr. David King, a member of the IRMACS hosted BADAS program has been awarded a two-year SSHRC doctoral fellowship. This is another recognition of the value of social science research that has been done at the IRMACS Centre.

On Friday, April 4th, 2014, the IRMACS Centre will host its 9th Annual IRMACS Day. As part of our celebration we will launch the IRMACS Centre's 2014 Thematic Year dedicated to the pan-Canadian research initiative "AGE-WELL: Aging Gracefully across Environments using Technology to Support Wellness, Engagement, and Long Life."
