Message from the Associate Dean, PGME
Welcome to Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) at the Simon Fraser University Stephens Family School of Medicine.
Postgraduate medical education is a pivotal stage in a physician's professional journey where specialty-specific expertise is developed through purposeful learning experiences with increasing responsibility and independence. Our goal is to prepare residents for careers that advance the health of British Columbians through quality clinical care and systems improvement.
As a new medical school, we are excited to build a postgraduate medical education community that is innovative, collaborative, and responsive to the evolving healthcare needs of British Columbia. We are committed to fostering a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment where residents, educators, and staff feel valued and supported. Guided by our commitment to reconciliation and culturally safe care, we recognize the importance of Indigenous ways of knowing, lived experiences, and meaningful partnerships with Indigenous communities in shaping the future of healthcare.
To our applicants and residents, thank you for considering the SFU Stephens Family School of Medicine in your professional journey. We look forward to supporting your growth as physicians, leaders, educators, and scholars throughout residency and beyond.
To our educators, healthcare partners, and communities, thank you for your collaboration, mentorship, and commitment. Together, we are building a learning environment that will inspire the next generation of physicians and strengthen the health of British Columbians for years to come.

PGME Mission & Mandate
The SFU Stephens Family School of Medicine advances excellence in postgraduate medical education through a mission grounded in community engagement, social accountability, Indigenous ways of knowing, and equity. These foundational pillars inform every aspect of our educational environment and are woven throughout our operations, faculty development, learner experience, and enduring partnerships with communities, health authorities, academic institutions, and government to improve health outcomes across British Columbia.
Our Community & Sites
Our school is committed to graduating physicians with the skills, knowledge, and commitment to deliver team-based, community-centered primary care throughout the Fraser Salish region and across British Columbia.
The Fraser Salish region is the primary learning location for all SFU residency programs. This region serves a large diverse catchment of more than 900,000 residents and reflects the demographic and health system realities of one of BC’s fastest-growing and most culturally diverse regions.
Training will be delivered throughout the Fraser Salish health region wih additional experiences offered in rural communities. The academic campus and administrative office will be based at the SFU Surrey Campus. Clinical learning will occur in Fraser Health facilities and complemented by a network of community-based practices across the region. These practices are supported through collaboration with local Divisions of Family Practice.
