Research
The SFU Stephens Family School of Medicine leads and supports community-engaged, Indigenous-informed research and enables Indigenous-led research. Our research aims to transform primary care education, health care, and health systems.
The Research Division is the hub for this work. We are building strong, respectful relationships with Indigenous Nations and organizations, equity-seeking communities, academic partners, and health care organizations. We uphold Indigenous rights and self-determination, and value lived experience and diverse ways of knowing.
By bringing different perspectives together, we and our partners identify questions and challenges that matter most to Canadians. We will generate new knowledge and learning, and put that learning into action to improve health and health systems in B.C., across Canada, and beyond.
SFU Stephens Family School of Medicine research plan 2026 - 2031
Launched in 2026, the Stephens Family School of Medicine Research Plan 2026-2031 reflects extensive consultations with our community, health care, and academic partners. It outlines the principles that will guide our work for the next five years, our research and scholarship priorities, and the infrastructure needed to achieve impact.
Priority areas of research and scholarship
The School of Medicine as an Intervention
The SFU Stephens Family School of Medicine’s innovative medical education program presents a unique learning opportunity. Through research and scholarly activities, we will continuously improve our medical education program and support learner success. We will also study how the school of medicine, as a system-level intervention, affects the broader community and health systems in B.C.
Health Systems
We will lead and participate in research to improve the health systems across the province and beyond. We will focus on the connections between primary care and other social and community-based health programs.
