FAMILY MEDICINE PROGRAM
Program Information
The Family Medicine (FM) Residency Program is a two-year, community-focused training program designed to prepare residents for comprehensive, patient-centered family practice in diverse and growing communities across British Columbia.
The program will welcome its inaugural cohort of 12 residents in 2027.

The Family Medicine residency program is for 2 years. Program length of training does not exceed the Royal College or College of Family Physicians of Canada standard.
Training is anchored in longitudinal learning experiences, with residents spending a minimum of one full day per week in their core Family Medicine setting and the remaining days in other areas of primary care. This structure supports continuity of care, sustained preceptorship-resident relationship and progressive responsibility, aligning with CFPC expectations for comprehensive, continuity-based family medicine education.
During PGY1, residents can expect clinical learning experiences approximately equivalent to the following:
- Family Medicine – 6 weeks plus 42 weeks longitudinal (1 day a week)
- Rural Family Medicine – 4 weeks
- Family Medicine, underserved populations including Indigenous Health – 2 weeks
- Mental Health – 8 weeks
- Maternity and Newborn Care – 6 weeks
- Pediatric Medicine – 6 weeks
- Procedural and Surgical Care – 2 weeks
- Urgent and Emergency Care – 6 weeks
- Inpatient Care – 4 weeks
- Care of the Older Adult – 4 weeks
During PGY2, residents can expect clinical learning experiences approximately equivalent to the following:
- Family Medicine – 11 weeks plus 37 weeks longitudinal (1 day a week)
- Family Medicine, underserved populations – 2 weeks
- Palliative Care – 5 weeks
- Procedural and Surgical Care Selective – 4 weeks
- Urgent and Emergency Care – 4 weeks
- Inpatient Care – 4 weeks
- Care of the Older Adult – 4 weeks
- Addiction Medicine – 2 weeks
- Sports Medicine – 1.5 weeks
- Electives – 8 weeks
- Speciality Clinics – 2.5 weeks
How to Apply
All applications are processed through CaRMS and must be submitted in accordance with CaRMS requirements and timelines. Applicants who are invited to interview will be contacted directly by the University, while all other application-related communications will be available through the CaRMS system.
