Prospective Residents

Residency training is governed by nationally recognized certification standards established by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) for specialty and subspecialty programs, and by the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) for Family Medicine.

The SFU Stephens Family School of Medicine offers the following Residency Programs:

Note: Residency duration is determined by the specialty and training program. Program lengths vary across disciplines to ensure residents acquire the knowledge, skills, and clinical experience required for independent practice and certification.

Sessions will be hosted on: 

• Family Medicine Information Session: October 8th, 2026, 5-6PM PST
• Family Medicine Application Q&A: November 24th, 2026, 5-6PM PST
• Family Medicine Meet & Greet with Program Leaders: February 2nd, 2027, 12-1PM PST

All applications to SFU programs must be made through the Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS). If you are interested in residency training at SFU please refer to the CaRMS website for application deadlines, required documentation, and eligibility requirements.

Program Descriptions for Canadian Medical Graduates (CMGs) stream and International Medical Graduates (IMGs) stream are linked below.

International Medical Graduates (IMGs) seeking to be matched to a residency position in British Columbia are required to participate in B.C.'s Clinical Assessment Program (CAP). The CAP provides a transparent and equitable process designed to support residency programs’ assessment of candidates past clinical experience as both a learner and a practitioner, and to evaluate their potential for success in residency training and suitability for working in communities across B.C.

Admissions requirements for the IMG stream is standardized across the province of B.C.
